In my opinion, (and based on my experience with my 1st hifi many years ago), is the fact that by adding an equilizer you end up fiddling and adjusting the controls everytime you change a cd .... instead of relaxing and listening to the music

That's always the danger. That's why you would normally EQ the room to a reference curve, then forget about it.

for equalizers ignore anything 'hi-fi'. search for studio equipment. i reccomend looking on dv247.com. email them asking for advice and i'm sure you will find them very helpful.

do some reading on parametric equalizers, they are the most flexible and you will be able to isolate and cut the exact frequency you want. they come in analogue or digital forms.

i dont know of any itunes plug ins, but there are loads of music production softwear available so you may be able to find a good parametric equalizer program, but again ask proffesional music producers or those that sell the kit.

i dont know if it's snobbery or experience but equalizers are not thought highly of on this site

If you fancy a shift to Foobar, it has a VST wrapper component. This will allow you to get a studio quality parametric EQ VST and follow the suggestions you have already been given, which should prove conclusively whether or not this your solution. Now you've been told how to obtain an EQ, which type of EQ you need and even which frequencies are causing your problem. Since you have come here for advice, and been given everything you asked for, perhaps you can see how unnecessary your attitude is.
