I have recently received from a colleague (who recently passed away) a Linn LP 12 / Lingo turntable. I have previously had a Rega Planar 3, and have used a Cambridge amplifier. Into a pair of Celestion Ditton 44 speakers. Please could you advise me what a good amplifier i could get to use alongside my Linn LP 12.

You have a top source there. I'd be looking at speaker upgrades, too, if it's within your budget.

Really, the Linn won't be disgraced by systems running into 5 figures so it is very hard to give you an answer.

My suggestion would probably cost a bit more:

Linn Kairn Pre (£450 - £500 on ebay)

Linn LK100 Power (£240 - £270 on ebay)

or You might get a Naim NAC42 / NAP110 / SNAPS for that price.

Naim Nait 3s look like they go for around £250 ish. (Going by completed ebay listings.)

They didn't come as standard with a built-in phono stage (you can add the optional NA522 MM and NA523 MC internal circuit boards that cost £126 on ebay from Tom-Tom Audio).

However you could use something like the Rega Fono-Mini A2D (£85) instead.

It wasn't clear to me if you currently use Ditton 44s or used to use them.

Do both the amp and speakers have to come out of the £500 budget?

If so, you are going to have trouble finding modern speakers of the same size and quality as the 44s within your budget.

If you are after something smaller then there are hundreds of decent (and more modern) second-hand speakers around for that kind of money.

Keep to the unfashionable (but good) models and brands.

For instance, I paid about £43 (including £15 delivery) for a mint/boxed pair of Mordaunt Short MS20i Pearl Editions a few years ago and they haven't gone up much in value since then.

Personally I would keep your Rega and sell on the LP12

Noooooo! :O

I much preferred my Linn LP12 to my RP3.......though being serious for a minute.....the OP should do a comparison, as the RP3 isn't high maintenance.

Yep. Sell the LP12/Lingo and get the Sansui properly serviced so you know it's good for another couple of decades.

Get a nice minty Technics SL1200 or 1210 and put some money in the bank.

I too would get rid of the LP12, mine has cost me over £3000 over 25 years and packed up again 3 weeks ago after the Valhalla failed. (I did do two arm upgrades and the one power upgrade)

I'd suggest an inspire based on RP6, should last a lifetime, with no HIGH maintenance !!!

That amp is one of the Sansui classics, if not the best known. Keep it, and, if it needs a service, get it done.

Your LP12 is also a classic. Depending on the arm and cartridge, it is still worth serious money. Selling and going for a Rega or Technics would be a serious downgrade. If you're not really interested in high end HiFi then sell and keep your existing gear. If you are interested in quality sound, then keep the Sansui and the LP12 and sell your old gear.

The LP12 is a reliable turntable and, once set up - not as hard as dealers want you to think - doesn't need touching for years. The experience of the user above is the exception, not the rule.

Don't know about the speakers. Had some for a while bought secondhand off a uni in NSW so they might have been clapped out, but to me they didn't sound super special. A friend bought them and still uses them, so they can't be that bad. Big sound - some comments here: http://www.pinkfishmedia.net/forum/showthread.php?t=66808. Anyway, if you want to put money somewhere, assuming the amp is fine, then put it into the speakers if you don't like the Celestions, but think a couple of levels up.

Up to you, but I'm seriously jealous, mate!

Good to see a "like mind".....was beginning to doubt my own advice.
