Pioneer LCD TV Price Crash!

Hi All,

Do not know what is going on but Pioneer LCD TV's have had their prices slashed - the KRL-32V can now be had for £699, the KRL-37V for £899 and the KRL-46V for around £1499 (least best deal). Many places also offer some sort of extended warranty as part of the deal as well so they are pretty good deals! I just wonder why? Pioneer announced nothing about new TV's at CES and the general consensus from what I have been able to gather is that the new models will not be out till late this year as the present models (both plasma & LCD) had 18 month product cycles. Usually a manufacturer will slash costs to get rid of existing stocks to make space for new models but as this does not seem to be the case, I wonder why this sudden move by Pioneer? Could it possibly be that with the onslaught due of LED-BL LCD TV's by most other brands pretty much eliminate the main advantage perceived by having a Pioneer set - ie: the best blacks in the business?

Hi,

Whatever the reason(s) behind the price cuts, I really hope that it helps both the consumer and Pioneer - there are so many opinions flying around as to whether Pioneer will be around much longer in the flat TV business? I hope they really stick around - I do not really see why the present and future bleak outlook would now affect them as they have very clearly and intentionally positioned themselves in the high-end premium market only - folks in that purchasing sector are rarely affected to the same degree as the mainstream purchasers so Pioneer should not really have anything to worry about should they?

BTW Andrew, will there be any chance of a review of the KRL-46V set sometime soon?ÿ

If Pioneer sends us one, yes - it's been requested for ages...

Hello Bazzy. Please could let us know where you can get the 32v for £699? This would be extremely useful for me!

We won't be looking at the 46" or 32" models, I'm afraid, as Pioneer doesn't plan to bring any more to the UK. What's out there with retailers is yer lot.

Which might explain the price drop.

Having seen the Pioneer 37V next to a Philips PFL7603, I'd say the Philips was better. I wasn't particularly impressed with the Pioneer. The Philips 7603 is a particularly impressive TV and one of the best the company has made for a long long time.

Hi,

I do not know if it is allowed to post links to retailers here so I had better not just in case! Just google for best prices and you will see quite a few retailers with the new pricing!

Hi Andrew!

Well, according to Pioneer anyway! I saw a video of a bloke called Jim Catchside of Pioneer UK who made it very clear that they were making products for the high end premium market only and that they had no intention to compete with other brands on pricing. It's a pity you folks will now not have the opportunity to review a KRL-46V set ÿ- it was something I was looking forward to! I am a little disapponted by the attitude some of these brands have when it comes to sending out units for reviews ÿ- why are they being such asses? They normally waste a fortune on advertising & marketing and yet they act so bizarrely in sending out units to major publications like WHF!

Pioneer have yet to really prove themselves on the LCD market. Their plasma sets are superb but I think their LCDs need to offer more than they do at present if they really are going to take a 'premium' approach. I've not been blown over by the 32V in comparison to the Sony KDL-32W4000 and the Panasonic and Philips sets I've seen.

Now that the Pioneers are less expensive, can't WHF just go out and buy one to review like they often seem to do?

Jim is the product manager, who we talk to regularly...

And please link away to retailers if you spot a hot deal, Bazzy!

Hi all, I have read that the review and I have to say that the WHF ratings are not correct.

I explain myself...

I think that we can say that for WHF the sony 40w4500 is the best tv on that size range. Right?

If i quote the review for the pioneer 37 LCD, it says "On pure performance terms, you'd be hard-pressed choosing between the Pioneer and our award-winning Sony KDL-40W4500, even with its extra three inches. "

Therefore if on performance basis are similar or equivalent and now the price drops, shouldnït we say that the pioneer 37 is the best 37" tv out there right now???

I think that if a brand loses one star because of the price, as soon as the price changes then the rating should be reviewed. It is confusing!!!

For me it looks like this magazine should have two ratings, one on performance and one on the ratio price/quality.
