I have an opportunity to buy one of these? Which one is better? Are the standard SD/free view pictures of similar quality?

The slim one looks good but my set will be wall mounted so space is not a big concern.

Thanks, John

John, a few points to note, technically they're virtually identical, the difference in picture quality is minute if even noticable but the KRP-500a is supposed to be the superior machine. Secondly, neither of them are exactly slim by today's standards. I've got the KRP-500a and it's still pretty chunky.

If you are wall mounting the KRP-500a will be more practical as it has a seperate media box, meaning you only need one system (read HDMI, sort of) cable and one power lead running to the screen, which should make installation a little easier.

Finally, if you can find either now you're doing very well.
