I am now confused!

In the SUPERTEST review of 37" flatscreen TV's in the August 2007 issue it is stated that ..."the Philips 37PF9731D is in the strange (some might say weak) position of having a 1080 resolution, but being unable to accept 1080P images from a high-def source".

The advertising blurb on their website states that it is a "Full HD display 1920x1080P allowing the best possible picture quality for HD input signals".

Help? Which is it?

Hi Lee,

We're right - the Philips can't accept 1080p natively, though is happy with 1080i. There are a few sets around like this.

This proves the peril of there being no standards-body definition of Full HD - it's a mere marketing phrase. Wheres HD Ready sets have to conform to a certain set of standards, there is no such issue with sets labelled as Full HD or True HD.

Having said all that, on a 37in set, the difference between 1080i and 1080p is likely to be of minimal concern - it would be tough to tell the two apart.
