Anyone else have a similar problem with Panasonic Plasma TV's?? I bought the VT20 at the weekend and the 3D is amazing on it, that is until today when the damn thing wont switch on and the red light keeps flashing (10 times in a row then stops), needless to say, I am not happy as its only 5 days old. Worse still, I just sold my Kuro PDP5090 to buy this, which worked faultlessly for the 12 months I had it. Possibly a very stupid mistake buying the Panasonic?! Anyone know a quick fix on this or is it a case of lugging a 50" plasma tv back to Currys?! Be grateful for any advice (shouting at Panasonic is a given!) Kev

i had a similar problem with a panasoni 46in plasma , it was sent for repair under warranty , but it was unrepairable , which is not to say yours isnt , if i were you , id demand a replacement set , after forking out over two grand . the seller will probably suggest a repair , i personally would not accept that , just my views ..

Take it back to Currys and demand a replacement set or tell them you will have a full refund. Would you want a quick fix on a set that is 5 days old and has just cost you over £2K? I certainly wouldn't.

I don't know if it will help, but I had a similar problem on my Philips TV and thought it was broken. But turning it off at the mains and then 'rebooting' it did the trick, bit like when a computer crashes and you have to restart. Can't guarantee this will work, but might be worth a shot.

Thanks for that, appreciate the advice. Its so frustrating!!! I have only used it 3 times! Not a good advert for Panasonic and not a good start to the 3D experience.

Whilst I am writing, may aswell share a further issue I have discovered with the 3D performance. Under normal circumstances, a 50" plasma would probably be ideal from my seating position which is probably 15-18 feet back from the set. What they dont tell you when you buy a 3D set, is the ideal distance to sit from it for the 3D to actually work, is 1.58 x diagonal screen size, which is apparently about 6.5 feet. I tried this out and true enough, the closer you are to the set, the (markedly) better the 3D experience becomes, to the point where if you move further back than about 8 feet, you lose the 3D effect. I guess this could be because my set was inherintly faulty, but I am not so sure.

Anyone prior to 3D telling me to buy a 50" TV if I was only sitting 6 feet away from it, would likely think I was bonkers!!! Presuming WHF have reviewed this set, I wonder if they could comment on this and if they found it to be a problem?

I did the math and a 65" Panasonic (to be released) only gives about 8.5ft ideal viewing distance, so unless you have a fairly small lounge, seems to me unless you get a 3D plasma screen of 100"+, not much point buying one!!!

Just my opinion, but then I seem to be pretty well placed to give it, as I have the VT20 (albeit it has died already!!)

Thanks Andy,

I have tried re-booting it, unplugging hdmi leads etc etc, but unfortunately I am still met with the blinking red light (no pun intended!) Its going to be returned tomorrow which is a pain as the box is massive!

Have you reviewed the set and noticed the issue I have found with screen distance Vs 3D performance?

Hi m330kd,

A few years ago I purchased a Panasonic plasma from Comet, it was DOA, spoke to Comet who said they would repair the set.

I refused the repair but Comet insisted this was the only option, I contacted Panasonic who were very helpful and agreed the set should be replaced and not repaired, 2 days later new set arrived from Comet and old one taken away.

Insist on a replacement or refund.

We haven't had a VT20 in for test yet - though a 'V' set review will feature in our next issue....

Let us know how you get on with your repair/replacement. Good luck!

I've just remembered watching a video on youtube about this tv. there is a setting that lets you turn off the screen when listening to music so you can save the screen life and save energy. it was on a US model tho so the uk model might not have it. So you could of turn that setting on by mistake. Turn pressing the menu button or if that fails press all the buttons on the remote lol

Clare, many thanks for the comments

I think it would be of great use to the readers if you could include the distance Vs 3D performance in the review when you do it, as I think that will be a massive selling point (or not purchasing point) and one readers should be aware of.

On a positive note, the helpful chap from Currys advised me this morning that there is a picture wizard setting that Panasonic are aware cause this problem (he spoke to their rep) and they have told me to press and hold the F button on the screen, press the vol down button on the screen then the i button on the remote which should reset the TV and solve the problem. They have also said that if it doesnt work, they will be happy to give me a refund this evening, as they sold me the one they were supposed to have put on display and cant get me another for 10 days. Not sure my better half can live without Eastenders for that long!!

Thanks all for your comments, I will update later and let you know if the fix suggested by the panasonic rep works!

Mine was delivered yesterday, and mercifully doesn't seem to have the same problem. My commiserations.

FWIW, the picture is stunning. I'm sat about 5-5.5M away, and wouldn't want to be much closer. Couldn't give a monkeys about 3D. The goggles aren't especially comfortable and make you look like a complete turnip.

No Freesat dish and Freeview HD not in my area yet, so daytime Freeview shows its poor quality. That said, when the broadcasters bother, it's very good indeed. I accidentally (honest) caught a bit of Eastenders last night, and if I'd been told it was HD, I wouldn't have been scratching my head.

My gripe is that the remote sensor is smack bang in the middle of the set, just above the stand. If you have your centre there, you'll have to move it...

LOL, yes probably a salespersons dream, as I purchased the matching Panasonic DMP-BDT300 3D Blu-ray player to go with it, (although I did manage to get 2 HDMI 1.4 cables thrown in). The 3D is fantastic on it and well worth having. I note the comments from another reader that he just received his and loves it. Cant agree more that the goggles make you look daft but I wonder if he could comment, rather than saying he doesnt much care for 3d, if he has the same issue with performance of 3D vs distance from the set.

Dont get me wrong, sat about 18 feet from the set and watching SKY HD in 2D it does give a very good picture, albeit not as good as the Kuro but then mine was tweaked by ISF (and when I say "sold", it was more, "gave it away" to my sister for £800!), however I bought this for the 3D performance as much as anything else.

I still have a 32" Kuro LCD lurking in one of my bedrooms I think, unless this quick fix works, I guess that will get an outing for a week or two!!

Oh, forgot to mention. Completely agree regarding position of the sensor, its in completly the wrong place and hidden by my centre speaker!!!

Sounds like you are sat same distance from me and as I say, 2D picture is just great, however as this is a 3D set, that should be great too and it doesnt work from that distance. I note you wouldnt want to be 6 feet away from a 50" screen either, which is kind of my point, why should you have to be sat so ridiculously close for this tech to work?!!

Mate, just to go off topic slightly but how big is your house?. Not only do you have the ability to sit the equivalent distance to the bottom of my garden away from the TV but you have bedrooms so big a 32 inch LCD gets lost in there!

If I were you, I'd take it back for a refund, thats a lot of spondoolies not to get an A1 product. Having to do the TV version of Ctrl+Alt+Del all the time doesn't seem on to me.

What this thread may have inadvertently brought to light though is the apparent problem with viewing distance and 3D on a domestic sized screen (50 inch) - which actually would look like an exibited mural in my front room but probably looks more like a small water colour in your vast expanse of the west wing

- incidently, you don't have a moat at all do you?

about this distance point.. would 1.8 metres b too close to sit in front of a 50" tv coz i sat closer than that to the vt20 when i demo'ed it and i found it ok..

UKDAVEj - hilarious!!!

Unfortunately, the TV version of Ctrl+alt+del has done nothing to revive the TV and I have the TV version of a windows blue screen!!! Its well and truly dead.

At least Currys have offered a refund on it, thats the way to go I guess!

Movie Man - 1.8m is probably ideal viewing distance, unfortunately I dont have that 'luxury'!

even hd can look a little pixelated on a plasma if one is too close , im no expert , but i think 1.8 metres is too close for comfort on a 50in plasma , especially with sd ..others may not agree though ..

I know they seem to recommend ridiculously close viewing distances often in shops for large screen sets seemingly in the hope that you think it's a good choice to fit a massive screen, but I personally would say that 42 inches would be much more preferable a screen size when sitting less than 6 feet from the screen, and unless you're room's a small home cinema, and not a living space, I'd still say that 42 inches may be pushing it. I happen to sit about 6 feet (approx 1.8m) from my tv and it's 32" in size and frankly immerses me enough for movies just fine - but that's just me. If you want to occupy your complete peripheral vision and have nothing else than the picture to distract you so to speak, you could justify a bigger screen, but I think you just adapt to what you have anyway!
