Has anyone bought one yet and if so I would welcome their views. I dont want to jump in too early and buy a lemon!

At long last I will be getting rid of my Samsmug (yes thats right, very smug when I bought and even more so now its going back) 55es8000. Apart from the 6 repairs, lip sync issues and inability to download new firmware, it was good.

I now want to move to 4k UHD. Sonys new 55 HDR misses out on the THX and Ultra HD Premium badge but it is a lot cheaper and a bit smaller. I would welcome your views people.

Could phone Nick up at Hsound.co.uk and ask him what he thinks?

sony aren't using the UHD premium labelling but they said they meet the required specs for it, so the 93 series can reach 1000 nits. i would get the KS9000 over the sony myself, as it looks nicer. is only £100 more and has FALD although maybe a low amount such as 128/256 max zones. nothing compared to the 512 of panasonic though.

for the same price as the 58" panasonic you could get the 65" sony! it's around the same price..very good deal for the 65"

Which model number exactly?

Why are you considering buying only the Panasonic 58", when the 65" version is not that much more expensive!

Nugget & Son,

Thanks for your posts.

The Sony would be the KD-55XD9305.

I can't go bigger than 60' given where the set is going to be placed.

Having contacted Sony I have had a very spurious reply where they tell me that "Sonys Ultra HD is with premium standards. Sony only uses its own logo". Given that they are part of the Ultra HD Premium panel, not only is the reply nonsense, it makes no sense.

indeed, i dont know why they aren't classed as UHD premium when they are capable. so you have a choice, sony pana or samsung. do you play games? panasonic doesnt have the best input lag. i haven't seen any reviews on sony's slim backlight drive technology so cant tell you if it's a good a tv as the others. they should be similar PQ wise so its personal preference. do you want tizen, or android marshmallow as smart platform? not sure if panasonic still uses firefox. tizen 2.0 looks very promising and also android will get much better over time.

Im not convinced that the set is capable otherwise they would have the UHD premium all over it given that they are invested in the UHD Prem panel. Something just doesn't ring true and the inconsistency in messages is driving my away.

I don't game on the TV and currently use BT view as my set top. I'm after the best picture quality I can get for my bucks so long as it's not on a curved set.

i'd get the panasonic 58" then, biggest you can fit in and best black performance of them all especially. not sure how well the "honeycombs" work though

panasonic doesnt have the best input lag.
That AV forums review has since been updated. Panasonic's input lag is quite good actually.

"When we initially reviewed the DX902 we measured an input lag of 68ms which is too high for serious gamers. However our review sample was one of the first production units in the world and was running an early version of the firmware. In response to our findings Panasonic have updated the firmware and as a result the 58-inch DX902 now measures an input lag of 35ms, whilst the 65-inch model measures 38ms."

not as bad but still the 65" is nearly double of samsung's 2015 SUHD line

Having moved from a Samsmug UE55ES8500 this Panasonic is in a different league.

Out of the box it is brilliant. The amount of settings and adjustments available means that I need to spend time seeing just how much better I can get it. I have it in a very bright room and it copes brilliantly, it sounds good as well.

Now where this and almost every other set can be improved. Manufacturers need to realise that often people's choice is limited due to the footprint of the stand. This is no exception, the stand is wide and deep so make sure you have the space for it.

I have no hesitation in recommending this beauty. I have no idea if it's the best in it's class but I am happy that I bought it.

It does make you wonder as to what some are playing at. Are they trying to steer you towards a set with more profit do you think.

Last night had chance to view the set in a dark room and yes I like it. As with lots of quality sets it really does show up poor transmissions. I Netflix ultra HD through the sets app and it is stunning! There is something strange going on with the sound as at one point I thought we were being invaded from the planet zog. Very deep and distorted. Appareantly its a switching process and is resolved by changing the order in which things are swithed on and by swapped sound output to TV and then back to amp. a quick fiddle and Bob was my reinstated as my uncle.

I can definatley hear the cooling fans and you know how it is, once youve heard them you always hear them. I recorded 62db (backgound of 50db) with the meter placed top centre at the back of the set around 350mm away. This distance being level with the rear most point of the stand. The Samsmug was fanless ( I think ).

If anyone else has the 58" set and has chance to take a measurement I would appreciate it. Meters are available as apps.

Are the AVF reviewers still doing consultancy for Panasonic, then?

Spiny, I think it's prevalent in a lot of places and more so elsewhere. What hi-fi seems to attract more honest joes and fewer brand trolls. Sorry brand trolls

Can I make a suggestion and ask that pressure is put on manufacturers to supply foot print specs as well as overall dimensions. Come on What Hi-Fi take the challenge.

I have compared the Panasonic with the Samsung KS9000, and although the Samsung looks very nice, the Panasonic definitely has the edge in every other way. Of course, it's not cheap, but as Son_of_SJ says, the 65" version doesn't cost so much more than the 58" model.

http://www.s21.com/panasonic-tx-58dx902b.htm

The Sony XD9305 is nice, but am nervous about Android.
