Open backed headphones - How much noise leakage?

I am considering getting a pair of headphones as a gift for someone. I am aware of some of the pros and cons of the two types of over earphones, but how much noise leakage is there with open-backed designs?

A lot! My housemate often thinks I'm listening to the radio when I'm using them in my room when he's going past!

Yep. A lot.

If I'm listening to my stereo while The Wife is watching some dross on TV, we both get to 'enjoy' what each other is listening to a little too much, and both end up pushing the volume higher and higher.

Enough that I get worried even listening in the next rom to someone sleeping at night! Still worth it though

Lots! Only advise for listening in a room by yourself frankly! I love my AKG's, but my wife doesn't!
