Nowt special but really good picture for the money. Surprised myself as I was after the Marantz originally, but had a look at Sony, Panasonic, and couple of others... ended up with the Pioneer BDP-450 and, of course, a HDMI cable.

Good job PP..I think it's 3d ready and with 2 hdmi outputs..Time to get a 50" 3d tv

Yup, it is 3-D ready but that wasn't the attraction. Just wanted something a little different as most people go for Marantz, Sony, Oppo & Pannies generally.

This evening I'll give my first proper impressions of the machine (on standard DVDs). Looks like I'll have to buy a few Blu-rays to add to the collection.

I see..but not until you watch in a bigger screen and the exp. is far more satisfactory

Treat yourself to some of the 1960s and 1970s classics. (I know you'll like Battle Of Britain and Lawrence Of Arabia for instance). They are a shock after DVD (even upscaled DVD) and you'll be a bit slack-jawed for a while and find yourself being able to count tiny holes on silver salt cellar tops and actually read the smaller print on the newspapers and documents people are holding. It can be a bit disconcerting at first.

If you like the early (Sean Connery) Bond films then they are almost 'hyper-realistic' on Blu-ray. (These old cinematographers used big film negs and it's only now that TV and 'video' formats have begun to catch-up with the potential crammed into that old negative film stock.)

Congrats PP, I have often been tempted to buy it too. I thought the 55 was a great player too. Great price for it too, I guess you did pay £169?

I liked my Pioneer BDP, but it was an nightmare with even slightly marked disc. Worth testing with a few less than perfect discs to make sure.

I'm a bit cross -- it has no analogue connection to the amp. It has coax which they say connect to AV or stereo amp. Made this very clear to Richers that was priority, as everything gets put thru the Leema (told him twice, once on the phone and when I visited that I only have RCA).

Suggestions welcome.

Sorry PP no options here... Or you connect it through your AV and use the DAC in it to listen to CDs.

The Leema doesn't have a DAC built in so no options here, unless with a DAC...

Like i've said in my first post, after all you'll need a DAC...

No, did ask about dacs to my DVD-R and most said buy a Blu-Ray. I'm feeling rather sore that the salesperson just kept saying "yes" to almost everything.

BTW, the picture is gorgeous.

Yes we did, but a Bluray that could be used as a CD player as well, like the Marantz, CA or even Oppo.

The salesperson has misinformed you, and as a consequence you have bought an item which does not meet your requirements. Take it back to the shop.

Indeed he has. But looking at other players around that price bracket none I can see have dedicated analogue connections.

I've played around 10 mins of each: 'Finding Nemo', 'Ice Age', 'The Battle Of Britain' and the picture quality is stunning. I would say (IMHO) it's better than HD channels on the Sky Box, with the blacks being darker than I've seen. And this is playing standard DVDs. Even my home recorded discs from the Sony are sharper and have less jitter. Makes it even more infuriating that it lacks basic analogue connections.
