Hi,

I'm about (after much prevarication and a false start!) to purchase a new cinema system to replace an aging JVC CRT TV. I have recently subscribed to Virgin media and have the HD PVR and HD channels. Can those of you (which is everybody!) with more experience than me tell me what you think of the following as a system?

Screen - Philips 47 PFL7404

Amp - Sony STR DG820

Speakers - B&W MT25

Blueray - Pioneer BDP LX52

Will these components from four different manufacturers complement each other OK?

What alternatives do you think I should consider?

The room this lot is going in is 5.5m x 4.5m and the screen will be mounted centrally on one of the 4.5m walls - what kind of budget do I need to allow for cables?

I really would appreciate any advice you can give.

Thanks,

Nick

The Sony amp is the definite weak link. I would look at least the 2400es or equivalent for your set up. Otherwise, it will be fantastic.

Cables wise, look on ebay. You can get some great deals. QED hdmi-p is perfect for your sort of set up. Speaker cable needn't go beyond the £5 metre mark. I think that's all you'll need (just hdmi's and speaker cable).

I agree with gerradasnails, you will not get the best out of your speakers with the DG820. You could also look at the denon 1910. The denon and the B&W are a good match, I have the Denon 2310 with the B&W MT30 and they sound really good.

Yep, I agree, my brother-in-law has the old Denon 2808 and MT20 and it's a very nice system.

OK - on the basis that the Sony 2400es can be found for £50 less than the 1910, would you let this swing your decision or is the denon worth the extra £50?

personally i would go for the Denon but the 2400es is still a great system. But you should def demo them both and see what you think sounds best
