Anyone else worried by this, or am I just fretting about something that in reality I'll probably never actually use so won't be a problem?

I guess that's a personal thing. It's important to me, perhaps less so to others.

Poorer 3D and higher input lag put me off the ST60, though I want to compare these aspects of performance across models and judge for myself.

Hadnt noted the higher input lag, that would put me off (though guess it would give me an excuse the next time my god-son kicks my ar$e on Halo!). Will be interesting to see how the ZT fares on that front (ie whether the different panel construction has any bearing on it - not technically minded enough to know whether it would or not).

It's not mentioned in the Cnet review; though David Mackenzie flagged this up as the ST60's Achilles' heel:

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/panasonic-tx-p42st60-201303312779.htm?page=Performance

Scroll down to the Console Gaming section for lag readings.

As for your Halo performance, input lag is a terrible excuse! Your son would be no less hampered. Besides, aren't you one of those nice dads that lets their son win?

cheers for that link. Will keep an eye out for lag results when the other models are reviewed.

And no I don't let him win - I'm his godfather (not his actual father) and as such I believe it's my duty to teach him some of life's harsh lessons, such as what happens if you let your opponent climb inside a Scorpion Tank!

Agreed. Wish I had.

I still think you should call JL. A 50GT60 for £1,250 sounds very sensible to me, if you can arrange a refund/exchange.

My (kind of a) plan, is to wait and see how good (in reality) the new Panasonics are.

Then, if JL stock the one I want, hassle them until they either send someone to shoot me, or exchange my GT for a something that will keep me happy for at least the next few years.

I like the look of the TX-P55VT60, but I'm not rushing into anything this time.

I got a good look at the new Samsung 51 inch plasma today, and it was right next to the GT50. I went into the settings put them both on normal settings and the GT50 was the clear winner. It had a brighter, clearer picture and better picture.

The best picture for the Samsung I found was dynamic, which is what it was on in the first place, but next to the GT50 I could tell it was way too bright.

Still no VT65 in our John Lewis, they don't even know if they will get one!

Cheers Gel.

I'll report on the VT65 once I've had a chance to play with it. First, I'll check for vertical bands with grey slides and content that shows the issue up. If it passes that test I'll be very relieved. Having owned a GT50 for four months, I'll have a very good idea of how the two TVs compare.

Despite my initial enthusiasm, I ruled the F8500 out once I discovered that black level is unstable and brightness pops are still in evidence (if less of an issue than on Samsung E series plasmas). Reports of horizontal banding were also a bit alarming.

I'm still formulating a plan B, in case all is not well with the VT65. (In other words, I'm anxious, as this is the most I've spent on a television).

It was strange because in dynamic it looked really good, next to the GT50 in normal you would have to say the Samsung looked better, as in it was brighter and better looking picture. But in the end I just grabbed both controllers and put them on the same settings, then the Panasonic looked clearly better. But when the Samsung was in dynamic the picture looked clearer than it did in normal.

Auditioning under shop lighting is always difficult and John Lewis displays TVs in unhelpfully bright conditions.

This perhaps explains why they're cutting back on plasma, as non-videophiles would be highly unimpressed looking at a plasma TV in such an environment. If plasma sales suffer as a result, it probably seems logical to strip things back. When I last visited JL they had the most expensive Samsung TV in a light controlled area of the shop floor, while the GT50 was directly under a strip light.

To be honest, I still haven't seen a F8500 in action (as I say, in the end there were too many bugs that would have annoyed me). If comparing with 50 and 60/65 series Panasonics, I'd really want to test in conditions that better approximate a home environment.

Still thinking about my demo today. I am definitely going back quite a bit to demo it again. BBB, are you going to John Lewis anytime soon? Check out the Samsung will you? Compare it to the GT50 and tell us what you think.

The guy who posted the YouTube video is on AV too, and has uploaded some pictures of the football:

Went in Saturday briefly, but didn't spot either the Samsung or the new Panas.

May go in this weekend.

The new Samsung is about a foot behind the GT50. They still don't know if they will get the new Panasonic.

Every owner that's posted about the VT65 has said the vertical banding issue is fixed (though it seems early to say anything conclusive). Should I start to feel optimistic?

Technically I get mine tomorrow (it's past midnight).

Wow. Some bargains to be had here, Gel. I'm tempted to buy the ZT at that price!

I live in the West Midlands, will any retailer match these prices?

Thanks Gel,

Believe it or not, I tried that this morning. JL wouldn't match that price, as independent retailers such as Ashton TV must be within eight miles of the branch you bought the TV from.

I can price match up to 28 days after purchase, so I'll scour the internet until that period ends.

Pretty sure some will. Our John Lewis does. They just go by if there is an actual shop, they will price match.

Most shops price match these days, eg Richer Sounds etc.
