Hi, I have a surge protected 6 way extension lead and would like to shorten the length of the mains lead to it.
There is a manufactures label attached saying that a new plug should not be fitted, if cable is damaged
Am I correct in assuming this is to do with the mains lead being screened and woukd therefore appreciate advice on what would be involved in changing the plug.
Thanks in anticipation

Leave as is, as if you don't know how to change a plug, then you may run into more problems with safety if wired incorrectly.
If you are desperate there are plenty of videos on You Tube, however you do so at your own risk.

Hi, changing a plug is absolutely no bother to me, but thanks for your advice.
I was really looking for info on the grounding wire and shielding binding on the cable and specifically how they are terminated in the plug.
Thanks

Take the original plug apart and see??
Of course, if it's the moulded type, this may be difficult.
Cannot be many options as, if it's a UK plug you only have three pins and I doubt shielding is attached to any of them

👍
If it's a screw opening type, I find it almost impossible to believe that he wouldn't have already had the plug apart.
(Though nothing much surprises me any more).

I'm no gambler, but my money's on the screen being (carefully) connected to the earth pin.

Possibly, sometimes screened cables are just that and they aren't terminated.

Possibles, sometimes screened cables are just that and they aren't terminated.
Thanks, it is a moulded plug and my feeling is, as you suggested, that the 'screen' is connected to the earth pin. I'll ponder a bit longer. I could of course unscrew the cover on the socket end and see what in there.
