Hi, I'm hoping someone can help, I've recently discovered phono stages and have brought a mofi studio phono, my question is as follows. I'm using a 2m blue octofon stylus and from what I can gather I don't need to change any settings ie gain etc.. is this correct to get the best sound out of this phono stage with my stylus. Any help please.

Nice phono stage but a bit over the top for a moving magnet cartridge.
Surely it came with a manual as I have no idea what it's default settings are, although I will check.
Not I cannot find any images of the underside of this preamp.
Find out the recommendations for that Ortofon and use the settings underneath the MOFI to suit.
So....
Load = 47 kOhm
Capacitance = 150-300 pF

.....there you go.
It would appear that 47k Ohm is the default in the Moving Magnet setting and output is capacitance is set at 100 pF, a bit low but nothing you can do about that.
Most other settings are for Moving Coil type cart that you don't need to bother about.

Thank you so much for replying, so I'm guessing I just leave all the settings set to off? Would i be correct 🤔

No problem.
Seems you only have two settings to ponder with your cartridge.
All Off should be fine.
To get a bit more Gain it is possible you might need set on One and Twelve in the Gain settings but I doubt you'll need that.
Thank you so much for your help.

Very nice purchase. I was looking at the MoFi phono myself recently - very sleek and has had good reviews. I then had to go for something with lower capacitance setting to match my Audio Technica cartridge. For the Ortofon you should be fine once you factor in cables etc. Let us know how you get on!

P.s. what's the rest of your system?

It's what we are here for..... Glad to be of assistance.
There have been some on this forum lately that don't seem to appreciate my input. 🙂
Great choice of phono preamp by the way, by a well respected designer, I was always interested in the next one up the MOFI line the UltraPhono

Well I really appreciated your input so that's a big thumbs up from me. It's a rabbit hole all these phono stages lol... I also purchased the rega mk5 which at the moment I prefer but it's very early days, burn in etc..

Yes. Take your time. Plenty of phono preamps around as you say that all basically do the same thing but some appear better suited to certain cartridges than others.
Just bear in mind once you have chosen to stick with one a cartridge upgrade is always preferable to a preamp upgrade.

Hi, I'm using DNM Solid core v3 cable. Roksan integrated amplifier and project debu carbon turntable which I've done an upgrade on platter to acrylic which is lovely. I'm running Kef ls50 meta with a rel t5i sub. Really enjoying the sound, oh my speaker cable is chord rumour x which I will change to the dnm solid core cable at some point. I believe there's sometime for burn in on the mofi so will let you know but the soundstage and detail at moment is night & day diffence from the phono stage on the roksan...

Nice set up! Sounds really good abo the Mofi - and for what I've read, the Roksan amps are meant to have pretty decent phono stages.

Hope you don't mind me saying, but I would be wary of spending lots of money on cables. There's plenty of discussions around it and the consensus - from "tech savvy people" (and I include my former electrician and now sound tech brother) - is that there is very little difference between cheap and super expensive cables; if any at all.

I actually read of a chap who did some tests between expensive speaker cables and coat hanger wire (!!! For that I believe it is called the coat hanger test), with actual measurements etc and found the difference between the two would be inaudible!

In case it won't post the link, here is the title:

Makes for pretty interesting reading haha

Is the Rega to Fono MM? And how do you rate it against the Mofi? I bought it in December but returned it as, while nice, I didn't feel it was a big enough improvement over my amp/turntable built in ones.

I generally like what AudioQuest does (soundwise), but being mostly solid core based cables, they won't suit every system. So care does need to be taken matching cables to systems, and it's worth trying a few out as sometimes the characteristics (sound and electrical) can sometimes suit certain systems.
