What on Earth am I doing?

I currently own three pairs of Mission speakers: 753s, 781s and some 731s (which are awaiting some TLC). I have previously owned 760is, 732s, 780SEs and 771es. All of which were brilliant.

So why, at three in the morning, did I purchase another pair of 732s on fleabay?

And no, I was stone-cold sober...

Maybe you were sleep-walking?

That makes you a collector! that is what I woudl do if i win the lottery - collect nice hifi stuff.

Ha ha, tell me about it.

Between me and my housemate (a few years ago now) we had the Mission:

731, 732, 733 and 734

752, 753, 754, 75C, 75AS, 78DS and I still have my second pair of 750LEs

They certainly used to make some great speakers!

Yes, they certainly did. My first ever hifi speakers were the 760is, and I've been hooked ever since. Just wonder why they have slipped off the pace in recent years.
I think a revised. updated 753 for the 21st century would be a great idea!

my first home cinema was a 70C1, a pair of 771Es and 70s for the rears. Sold 'em on fleabay for £104 to some guy in a van, who drove all the way from Cardiff to London to collect them. Really should have kept the 771Es. They were ace.

The mission 761i was my first proper hifi speaker and it was great, really powerful. My last mission speaker was the 783 and that was great as well, bass to blast you up the wall.

The only problem I have with mission and there speakers are there floorstanders with these inverted drivers, with the tweeter under the midrange unit, if you have a high seat it can lose loads of detail, but still great.

I Love this post, made me laugh out loud...perhpas due to not being sober

Weeeelll, the 732s have arrived, and I must admit I'd forgotten how good they were. They are really giving both my 781s and 753s a good scare!

I'm sure the others are technically more 'hi-fi', but for the time being I find the 732s more involving and enjoyable. The bass depth is on a par with the 753s, and the detail is superb, with the soundstage hanging nicely in the middle of the room. OK, neutral they ain't, but for my music tastes they hit the nail squarely on the head. Main issue is that they are single wire only, so my power amp is useless...

They can be had for reasonable money on the usual auction sites, so if anyone is after some affordable, very capable speakers- particularly for dance and rock music- they come with my highest recommendation!

Come on Mission- let's see you back at the top where you belong!!!

Wish I had! Always keep a couple of ton on the credit card in case I spot a bargain... I'm the type of guy who will spend his last £100 on a piece of kit he doesn't need, rather than feed himself for the week!

Hey Dougal,

In your vast mission experience, have you found that your Kandy amp works well with the 78 series missions? Does it sound too bright / warm?

Also how is it at quieter levels, does it still sound good?

Thanks

Hi John,

Funny you should ask that.

The 781s did indeed sound bright with the Kandy- quite annoyingly so, in fact. Once I'd added the power amp to biamp them, it was much better, but still a tad treble-happy.

The solution came in the form of some inexcusably cheap Gale speaker cable, which has really sorted it out. Still high in detail, but the harsh edges have been smoothed off, and the sound is- for me- absolutely stunning. More bass, too.

Sounds great at low levels, but definitely enjoys being given the beans...

Yep, either would be a good call.

Also, keep your eyes peeled for NAD C370 or 372- or a 350/352 for something a bit cheaper. IMHO the NADs are a great match, and have the grunt to keep the speakers in check.

Best of luck!

Off to work now, catch y'all later!

Jon.

Just browsing and found this thread and I laughed.

Just last night, I hunted round for an old pair of 771's that I'd bought for my parents, but shortly afterwards they bought a bose wave (yeah, I know!). Anyway, they are not even run in, and they sound great (replaced some mid sized eltax monitors). Can't beleive they have been on top of my cupboard for 5 years !!!

Mind you, I might be replacing them shortly, or it might be the amp...or both..hmm

Contrary to popular belief, Mission do still make fabulous speakers. Anyone who is writing them off on the basis of a couple of reviews should actually listen to the 79-series. The 792s are awesome. I love my 751s but my 792s are in another league again.... Seriously!
