Hi ... have been purchasing and setting up an 'older' hi fi system ... I read a few posts that one can change 'something' on the power lead plug which alters the sound produced by the cd player ... have checked my manual amd it does not mention anything? ... any suggestions of clarification on this?

Only if the fuse in the plug has blown, in which case I'd suggest that a replacement would definitely improve the sound!

If you cut the mains lead about 10cm's from the back of the machine (unplug it first!!), and wire in a connector like this (see 'Male IEC Connector', on this page):

Then buy a new improved power cable like this- £35 (this is the one I have on mine):
http://www.cleareraudio.com/onlinestore/Copper_line_Alpha_Power.html
Connect it into the new connector on back of machine and sit back and enjoy the new improved sound....
It made a 'massive' difference to how mine sounded....more detail, clarity and bass thump!!!

thanks for the info so far ... however, I am sure that I read somewher that all I need to do is to reverse something? ... without buying or replacing items? ... I may be wrong, so please excuse my ignorance ...
There was a point to my "comedy". Whilst I'm sure you're convinced that you *think* that such a modification has improved the sound of your CD player, I'm afraid there are no viable physical or scientific reasons why it could *actually* change the sound. Think about it: the power to your CD player travels down miles of cable, transformers, relays etc of varying quality on its journey from power station to the plug on your wall. Why should a super-dooper plug and a metre of ludicrously expensive wire from the wall to the CD player make any possible difference?
This kind of thing is debated long and hard in high-end audio groups such as http://groups.google.co.uk/group/rec.audio.high-end/topics
The general consensus in that group is that there is no evidence that any genuine improvements are made as a result of cables in hi-fi systems, either based on physics, electronics or evidenced through double blind testing.
I think I'll start a business convincing naive hi-fi nuts that they should strip out all the electrical wiring in their house and replace it with 100 pounds per meter cable to improve their audio experience... kerching!!
...then do rewiring back to your local transformer....

I'm in no way an expert, but maybe a good quality cable reduces electromagnetic interference to other cables (interconnects, speaker cables etc) or the units themselves (amp, cdp, etc). That's of course if those strong magnetic fields are capable of interfering with them.
You'll probably do no better than read the article "The Ten Biggest Lies in Audio" in the Audio Critic magazine, to get an unbiased scientifically considered view on power cables, interconnects and other snake oil:

well ...as stated, I am fairly new to hi-fi but will give my 2 cents worth
as stated, I am setting up a vintage/classic system, as I do not have a large budget ... I have so far purchased a Marantz cd63 MKII signature cd player, a pioneer A400 amp and a pair of old B&W DM2 speakers (the 1st version-3 way transmissions) plus stands etc
I also recently purchased several 2nd hand speaker cables on ebay ... these were from someone who lives locally and were cables that were removed from restaurants etc that were being refurbished ... bargain prices ... 0.99 pence per set, and some cables were 13 -20 foot long ... paid £8.95 for a large bag full and seller included loads for free
Included in the cables were some thick monster copper cable, QED, Jamo, and a few others with no names
All cables are unterminated, so have sorted into 3 metre lengths, and have tested on my system playing the same cd tracks at the same volume setting
Conclusion: there are major differences which is clearly evident to both me and my wife ... so those who say that cables do not make any difference .... YEA RiIGHT!
