The only concern I would have, keeping the probably sonically superior KI, is the wear and tear on the transport. They don't last forever and it will fail eventually.

Saying that, the KI could have a decent transport and the 6007 might use something less reliable. CD transports are not as easy to source these days.

I've no idea how many companies are still supplying transports, but I doubt they are making high end parts.

The bit that spins is always the weakest link and I've had so many fail in the last 35 years.

Does anyone know which CD transport has the lowest failure rate?

I might buy one final CD player with that transport and see if it lasts!
I would like to think this one :-

and it can be found in this bargain :-

Hi folks

I have owned a Marantz CD63 MkII KI Signature CD Player for many years…it’s still working perfectly with zero issues, but I’m wanting something better and more modern..and to be able to play FLAC files via USB

I have a cash buyer for my old CD63 next week and I was going to put my money on the sale to buy the Marantz CD6007 from Richer Sounds next week, but now I’m hearing about an issue with the DAC installed not being the one advertised?!!? it is not the AK4490 as Marantz state, but an ESS ES9010 K2M??

How do I get one with the AK chip? Is there a way to tell with serial numbers?

Naughty naughty Marantz!!

The K1 Signature was a top CD player in its day. The CD6007 is Marantz's entry level player. I wonder if you will hear a difference? I would audition it before buying.

My Roksan K3 sounds infinitely better than the Marantz CD6000 OSE it replaced. Not in the same galaxy let alone the same ballpark. It would be otiose to list the many dimensions in which it knocks the old deck upside its head.

I've read this sort of thing before. There are not only DACs but high precision clocks (which nobody writes about, but are incredibly important, hence the re-clocking kits that were around for old-school CD players) as well as analogue amp output stages in a CD player. They do not contain some sort of idealized laser pickup that automagically generates good sound because (sniff) it's digital, innit? Something has to get the pits in the CD to a 5V line output - and that 'something' varies.

You may wish to contemplate the contradiction between the two statements "The Red Book standard is the same spec and there is very little to modify/upgrade." and "Ken certainly knew his stuff. I've always loved the Marantz sound."

Which one is it? All I can say is that from my experience, Touraj also certainly knows his stuff.
I own a CD6000 OSE, heavily modified by Trichord Research to serve as a dedicated CD Transport. Hands down the best CD Transport I have owned, and I had a few. And still going strong, after nearly 20 years in that role! Before the modification, I briefly tried it via its Analogue Outs and the listening lasted less than a full album. :-/

It's a deeply mediocre Player, and from memory a clear downgrade over its CD-63 forebear, not only the KI model but the whole range. Indeed, it sounded mediocre even in comparison with earlier models such as the CD-52 MKIISE, the CD-72 (non SE), and the affordable but superb Technics SL-PG520A and -PS620A. It's not surprising in the least that your Roksan K3 performs on a whole different level. I would speculate that just about any decently designed modern CD player would...

Glad you're making good use of it. Even on the transport side mine eventually declined, developing a sticky drawer!

(Edit) I wondered why the name trichord rang a bell and yes (quick google) they were the ones doing the clock upgrade I mentioned. I looked at that option as I read some good reviews of the impact on the 6000's sound.

I don't think anyone is suggesting all old CD players are as good as old ones. Your Marantz CD6000 OSE was £300, a step or two above the manufactures entry level probably comparable to the current 6007. Your newer
Roksan K3 is somewhere north of £1,000.

On the other hand the CD67ki is legendary, a & 500 giant killer that destroyed played at double the price. Compared to the CD6007 which is their current entry level player.

Personally if I were the OP, I would borrow the new player to test it before selling the old one.

I bought a new CD6007 earlier this year and am very pleased with it. I upgraded from a CD6004 which I had had for 12 years because I wanted a machine which would play FLAC files & hi res too so basically any file I can throw it at. I think it does sound even better than the CD6004 so a big thumbs up from me.
