LPs that somehow never made it to CD

I've got a load of LPs that somehow never made it to CD or download, mostly inherited from my dad. I've have often wondered why at least some of them didn't. I'm sure a good few of them would have sold in enough numbers to warrant the effort. One of my favourites is the Decca Phase 4 recording of "1812 Overture" b/w "Nutcracker Suite" (Sharples, London Festival Orchestra). Another is the Eric Delaney & Louis Bellson album "Repercussion": criminally never available on any digital format as far as I have been able to tell.

Then you get some albums that are available digitally but the quality is so bad you think "who the hell signed-off this rubbish??". A perfect example is the abysmal needle-drop of Peter Appleyard's "Percussive Jazz". Absolutely nasty, noisy capture from a scratched and worn LP, which is made all the more unlistenable by the crippling digital noise-reduction they employed to try to make it bearable (which failed). The digital capture I made from my own LP using just the line-in on my Mac, a Technics SL-6 turntable and my Cyrus 2's phono-stage is in a different league.

What are your favourites that never appeared?

Green Bullfrog. Basicaly the Deep Purple boys with a few other blues stars jamming in the studio. They originally appeared under false names as the were contracted elsewhere. The title track is 7 mintes of Blackmore at his best.

Perhaps this will help:-

It was remixed at Abbey Road Studios, London in 1991 by Derek Lawrence and released on CD.

Connoisseur Collection NSP CD503.

But whether you can find a copy is another matter

What a fantastic service we get on here!!! I have a copy on the hard drve, made from the album.

I'll have to think of another one! Honeydrippers EP? There was a Welsh band caled Crys, who had a fantastic debut album. They were invited to the BBC to do a sesion for Tommy Vance on The Friday Rock Show. They would only go if they could sing in Welsh. That was the end of them.

🙂

This along with 'Roc cafe' and 'Shanti' available to download from iTunes store also if anyone interested.

I had the Tymor Yr Heliwr album. It was actually sold to a Japanese collector. They love albums on obscure record laels apparently. The 'Sgrech' album above seems to be a greatest hits package. It is also available on Spotify. I am having an excellent day today-))))))))))))

There are many brilliant classical recordings that never made it, my dad's records too. I'm trying to find a professional converter for these LPs since our turntable is currently out of action.

I had throught about doing the same for about 20-30 of my dad's LPs. Then I thought about the price it would cost to do a proper job, plus the fact that they wouldn't necessarily do it how I want it or as well as I want it. Figured it was another case of 'if you want it doing properly, do it yourself'.

There are some very good ADC's available these days, some admittedly quite pricey, but if you have a lot of vinyl to convert might be worth investing in one.

You have the mac and TT (without cartridge) so you could ultimately record them to digital yourself. You would probably be able to sell on the ADC for a good price when you have finished. Quite a bit cheaper than getting it done professionally I bet. 🙂

lol indeed. With the Thorens laid-up I've been using an old (actually, lot younger) Technics SL-6 I got cheap off ebay some years ago. The original cartridge had already been upgraded to an Ortofon OM-10, so considering the limitations of the deck, it sounds passable enough.

I would search for stuff on Discogs. If it's out there, it'll be listed on there, even if there's none available to buy, and it'll list different releases as well. Their prices are a little more realistic as well, as there's too many chancers on Amazon trying to make a quick buck by charging excessive prices.

There's a few on here, on sale from around £15.
