I have owned a linn for many years, circa 25. It has a lingo, ittok arm and clyde cartridge.

I have recently found that setting the tracking weight by use of the main counterweight, brings considerable benefits ie more secure tracking, lower surface noise, and better sound.

In order to perform this task, set the bias knob to zero, and the tracking weight dial to zero. You will need an accurate tracking force gauge, I have a shure. Move the main counterbalance until the desired tracking weight is set, then re-set the bias. You will find that the counterbalance is much nearer the pivot, hence much lower inertia, Please be careful when moving the main balance weight as this can be very tight on its sleeve. Put the arm in its rest and hold it tight at this point while adjusting the balance weight, you don't want to damage any bearings.

Take out an old vinyl lp, not much loved, record and using an 8mm drill in you hand, hold record firmly, over a beaker and reem out the centre hole. It doesn't take much off, but you should find a considerable improvement in the sound. If like me you find a vast improvement, then you may have the desire to do more of your more precious lp's

Now the first bit I have heard of and can understand.

But the second - 8mm drill bit on my precious Beatles...erm, thanks, but I'll pass...

Surely that would mean that the record has less chance of being properly centred and could lead to it playing eccentrically, leading to wow issues?

Sounds prone to misalignment to me but I'll try it with my ex's favourite LP.
