Haha, this thread is still going.

Nothing even matters came on shuffle last night. Probably one of my favourite tracks on The Miseductation.

Art is a carrier of the artist's message, which is his/her personal views and feelings about life. I'm the receptor and I have a 'conversation' with the artist everytime he/she sends me this message. We may agree or disagree on things. My critique of his/her art in the public sphere is to involve others in this 'conversation'.

Music and every other art is (should be?) more than mere milking of hormonal glands. She didn't record that album to make us just feel good, Thompson. It was meant to stir up emotions and ideas. She thinks religion helps social integration, I think education does better.

In this case I heard Lauryns message and I am responding on a thread someone else opened for me to voice our 'conversation'. When I hear Norah Johnes and Diana Krall singing standards I hear nothing and have no communication. They are nothing more than soft audio porn to me. I feel greater respect for Lauryn (although I do think she is very hot).

Why is rap appaling?

Well certain attitudes towards women and tha po-lice found in some of it leaves something to be desired but beyond that there's nothing to be appalled about particularly, most of the criticisms are the very same ones that are usually levelled at every new genre of music, "it's just noise", "there's no tune", "it's the work of the Devil", "You have a woman's legs" and so forth, all of which could earlier be heard levelled at the likes of rock and roll, heavy metal, even Jazz.

What IS interesting is that it's one of the few genres where one can point at one song and state, more or less definitively, that this was the first of its genre, namely Rapper's Delight by The Sugar Hill Gang, there aren't many genres you can state that about; did Black Sabbath invent Heavy Metal? Perhaps, but name the first ever Rock and Roll track or first ever Jazz track? Difficult.

Hmmmmm...... Sorry, the origin tale is slightly off.

'rap' originated out of Jamaica were it was referred to as 'toasting' - coming out of the reggae/ska dancehalls way back in the 60's - Lee Perry I think was one of the first to put it on vinyl.

I never said it didn't but few people, if any, would consider that to be modern rap or hip-hop, in the same way they wouldn't consider any of the other influences that hip-hop drew upon to be hip-hop. The same as rock'n'roll isn't considered Heavy Metal but you can still draw a line of influence directly back from today's metal all the way back to Chuck Berry and the likes but you wouldn't consider them to be Metal.

Rapper's Delight is, arguably, the first track to bring all those influences together into what we consider to be modern hip-hop today. If there's an earlier track that does that then I'm not aware of it and I've never heard any "expert" (of which I am not) mention anything earlier than that either.

We need to be sat down, face to face for this discussion....yeah.

I hear your point Lhc, commercially I'd agree with you, but that was my time and i remember the arguments from back in the day.....school days.

Really? I always pictured you as being at most about 25. You know, applying the saying that there are old trolls and there bold trolls, but there are no old, bold trolls.

I had a listen to the cd, and changed after a few tracks to Mary Gauthier ... Mercy Now

a bit different, and most prob not relevant to this thread (but thought I'd get it off my chest)

i.e. I don't think that I'd buy an album or cd by Lauryn Hill

May be not your taste. Their are albums out there I will not buy as well. That does not remove from the fact that she is very talented.

I have no idea why you keep following me around calling me a troll or whatever.

Do you see me following you?

don't get me wrong ... I never said that she is not talented ...

I listened to a few tracks and switched to different music .. but saying that, not many people enjoy my taste in music (especially my teenage kids)

what I was trying to say is that I would not spend £15 to buy that CD

I agree, I don't like her, although the unplugged album is more to my taste than her The Miseducation album, still does nothing for me, rather hear Mary Gauthier but not too often.

If you want something a bit different try Mary Boine - Gula Gula, play that loud, good winter music.

Her voice aside, anyone else heard the lyrics? I dislike the fact her racial empowering is done through religion. Her futile intellect has determined that everything modern is the work of the devil and we should all rush back to church for some resolution. Yeah... no thanks.

My point is, her performance or message is not perfect, although superficially entertaining and enjoyable. Out of everything one can criticize as flaws of this album, throwing in blanket statements "I hate rap" as a commentary is a bit... weird? I think Matt's comment was spot on.

That’s kind, but I hope you’ll forgive me if I suggest that your worldview is a bit, well, Manichaean:

Science = good

Religion = bad

I’m sure I hardly need to tell you that things aren’t that simple. For instance, Isaac Newton was a passionate Christian and mystic. James Clerk Maxwell was a deeply committed Christian too, as was (from my personal knowledge) my wife’s grandfather, who was one of the most eminent astrophysicists of the 20th century and a friend of Einstein.

As it happens, I’m an atheist (Sundays through Fridays: on Saturdays I dabble in agnosticism). But I do think people who bang on about the evils of faith are rather boring. Richard Dawkins’s best books are his early ones: The Selfish Gene is excellent; The Extended Phenotype is even better. The later stuff is uninteresting.

Here endeth the sermon.
