Some people have reported an inprovement to the SD picture quality by using the scart output for SD programming rather than HDMI. Haven't tried it myself, but it may be worth a go.

sky hd box will only output 1 at a time so if you hook both scart and hdmi up it will not work and i cant see swaping cables as you change chanels being much fun. besides sd chanels look ok to me.its got to be your settings

Sky HD boxes can output from HDMI,scart and indeed RF simultaneously. besides sd chanels look ok to me.its got to be your settingsNot necessarily, many people find SD pictures poor from Sky HD boxes via HDMI-Due to the fact that Sky boxes deinterlace(which they're renowned for doing badly) the native 576i signal when output via HDMI.

As a result some find using a scart to get a native signal from the Sky box and allowing their TV's to handle deinterlacing and upscaling yields better results,

Have mine set to 1080i which yields the best results in my set up for both SD & HD channels.

Well it will depend on how good the TV is at upscaling.

Have you connected the Sky box direct to the TV, or is it running through an AV amp?

would running it through an AV amp make much difference? i have my sky hd running through mine set to 1080i, and i have no qualms about the SD picture. my tv is a gash no name and the picture looks good to me. the only complaint i have is when viewing a channel in HD, then watching something in SD. but thats just because i get used to the HD goodness!

the_lhc:Yes it is another option but generally when people complain that SD channels look rubbish on sky the advice is to change it to auto because sky is known to be poor at scaling.

Where is the adviced sourced from.

User experience on here for one, you'll find plenty of people here to back that up, myself included, my SD picture quality improved no end when I set my Sky box to auto, but then I have a TV with a very good upscaler.

We'd always recommend trying both ways to see which link in your AV chain offers the best upscaling. Don't forget that could be an AV amp/receiver as well as the Sky box/source or your TV/projector.

Most of the channels I watch look good in SD. It depends on two things: Your TV, its picture engine, how extensive the picture settings are and How good the stream is from the channel itself.

I have a sony bravia W series set. I have motionflow set to medium, sharpness off, black correcter medium, gamma at +1, Noise reduction Low, Live colour off, Adv. Contrast Enhancer low.

If you like a setting dont have it on high ever. With most TVs this produces exaggerated results and causes artefacts. motion flow helps with reducing the blurryness, The other above setting help produce better colour without loosing detail. Something like Sonys Live colour is horrible because it illuminates certain colours and it makes the image flatter by reducing detailing

Well that's it indeed Clare, trial & error is the best way to find what best works for each individual and don't be afraid to go against the grain if you think a particular suggestion or setting doesn't achieve best for you, try all and the best one is the one the you think looks & sounds the best.

As said the general consensus is auto can work best, but experiment to achieve best results.

Most of the people who claim SD channels are poor on SKY HD boxes are those that have used sky+ for a while (Something to compare it to)

All those that says its fine had either just changed their tvs, dont calibrate properly or never really had anything to compare it to

Auto forces the HD box to 'deinterlace' the signal, and leaves the tv to upscale. Unfortunately the HD box has a very poor deinterlacer in it

1080i is the other option people tend to use on 1080 tvs as the signal ISNT deinterlaced, but of course it means the HD box upscales (But again, it has a poor upscaler)

Watching through scart means the box neither deinterlaces nor upscales which should (So long as a decent scart was used), produce the best picture (Assuming the tv has good deinterlacing and upscaling capabilities)

Yeah good thanks, set it to auto and let the TV do the work so to speak and definately improved.

The difference between the two seemed greater after i upgraded my HDMI to be honest but that may be because id been playing with settings for god knows how long

Since i switched to auto though sometimes i get a plain green screen with just sound but if i turn off the back on its ok

Thanks for everybodys help as usual, great response peeps much appreciated, very happy with my HD now
