Try playing SD programmes through the SCART lead - I find this works for me as the TV's own jiggery pokery kicks-in and de-interlaces and cleans up the picture considerably. Of course rememebr to flick to HDMI when watching HD!

Before I had my HD box I had Sky+ connected by Scart to the Sony 40" LCD TV. The sd picture was OK but was vastly improved when the HD box was connected by HDMI.

I would assume there was either something wrong with your sky+ box, something wrong with the tvs scart socket, or you were using a poor scart cable

I have never regarded scart as the best way of connecting to a TV. Before I bought the present 40" Sony I had a 32" CRT Sony. The pic from my DVD player when viewed by scart was inferior to when viewed by super VHS through the same scart lead which is of a decent quality. When I bought the 40" Sony I connected the Sky+ box by scart for a few weeks until the HD box arrived, the sd pic from that was far superior viewed by HDMI.

Ummm, if it's the same SCART lead, how can it be the SCART that's at fault? Perhaps you're not aware that SCART is capable of handling numerous different types of signal, from composite (the worst), through S-video (NOT Super VHS, that's something completely different) to RGB and even Component video (although it's rare to see that implemented). From your description I'd say you were initially viewing composite video through the SCART and then switched to s-video, which would be an improvement, had you tried RGB output though you'd have seen an additional improvement.

Just to add my two pennies worth.
I have a old Panna plasma, and a Denon 2310 amp. My sky HD box is set to 'auto' and I get my AMP to do the upscaling. This results in the best picture for me, and a slight lag between SD and HD (and vice versa) channels as the AMP works out the best resolution. Incidentally the AMP sets the resolution to 720p for my HD ready tv.
On the other hand, my dad has a 50 inch Pioneer and an Onkyo 875 amp. I was watching the footy the other day on it and noticed a lot of motion blurring when the camera was panned out and the players were running (obviously wasn't an England game!). I was really quite surprised as his TV is better than mine (I get no motion blurring on my old Panna!). I looked at his settings and played around and found the best was to set the SkyHD box to Auto, the Amp to 'Through' and let the Pioneer do the upscalling (obviously has a better upscalling over the Onkyo amp! Still wasn't as good as my set up though!! Maybe the Denon upscaller is very good - but still wouldn't be responsible for the lack of blurring on my TV...?
As has been said, it's best to spend half an hour or so and play around with the settings... but generally setting the SkyHD box to Auto and letting either your AMP or TV do the necessaries is the best method.

I am aware that a scart can handle all 3 modes and I switched the DVD player output between RGB Super VHS and composite.

I like the picture to be really sharp and I found the rgb pic to be rather soft. The composite was "just composite" but the super VHS was by far the best. With regard to the SKY boxes the output on the scart was set to RGB and the pic was OK but when I got the HD box I initially compared the pic between RGB and HDMI and found the HDMI pic much better. I guess it depends on which TV you have.

That DVD player is now at my Mothers house. She has a Panasonic 32" LCD TV and again I prefer the pic from the DVD player to be super VHS rather than RGB.
