The masses appear to have spoken...

Interesting, thanks. Although "That figure is more than double the record set by the Apple iPhone 4S, making it the biggest ever Apple iPhone launch." is probably not so much down to it being especially revolutionary but the fact that a lot of people (like me) skipped the 4S, waiting for a proper 'new' iPhone?

Maybe but then again the iPhone 4S sold more than 4 million on its first weekend in stores... The iPhone 5 is available in two new countries (Hong Kong and Singapore) compared to the iPhone 4s, so that is worth remembering when comparing figures.

It has sold a shedload again, basically.

Well, I'm not surprised at all, just like Harry Potter films were guaranteed to succeed even before release. :)

Apple currently is on a high, & people will lap up whatever it launches. Though iPhone 4S was basically just an upgraded iPhone 4 & people were hugely disappointed by it, it still held the record for maximum iPhone pre orders, until the 5 came along.

2 million pre-orders in 24 hours is truly phenominal. All those people prepared to shell out all that money on something that they have no experience of and no reviews to guide them as to competency or value. No there are NO fluffy creatures in the iPhone camp at all.

How much more do Brits pay for the iPhone than Yanks?

Its been reported that the 16GB Iphone 5 costs Apple around £103 to make - about £20 more than the 4S.

Even when u add in the software and distribution costs - thats a hell of a profit margin.

Had to do this as can't edit original[Access Denied]. £529 for 16Gb version that in US is 199 US Dollars. Incredible.

Good for them. Bear in mind that's just tear down costs, and won't include marketing, operational cost, tax etc. out of the £530 about 40-50% will be pure proffit.

$199 is the subsidised on contract price, whereas £529 is contract free price. Also, sales tax rates vary across the US so are not included on web pages. We usually pay 20% more than the US (ish).

So, a revamped product that aesthetically is only a subtle evolution but is actually larger, lighter, faster and uses less energy, and has decent build quality, would seem to be popular with consumers - who'da thunk it

Crazy, isn't it... I can't believe they didn't completely redesign one of the most successful products of all time!

Indeed (and the people you're having to respond to either know this and are being mendacious or are blinded by their rabid anti-Apple demeanours). For a real world example, I could have paid £300 upfront for a 64GB iPhone 5 (double the capacity of my 4) and kept the same price plan. I chose to pay £400 and reduce my monthly payments by £10.

Prices taken from WHF so took them to be accurate. Thanks for clearing that up.

Oh look there's been another Apple product launch and predictably and as usual all the Apple-haters have started to crawl out from under their rocks.

Hope you like your new phone Ben, well done :).

So Ben, neither "mendacious", "rabid", "blind" or "anti-Apple". Just diverted from the true[?]cost comparisons by raw data taken from this very website. Baaaaaaaa.

Good on you Ben for apologising. Serious question; why do you need an extra 32gb of tunes on a phone? That's got to be days-worth of continuous listening.

So you are happy to pay around £600 a year for a mobile phone ?

I pay £312 a year for 300mins,unlt texts, 1GB month with a Hox - and I thought that was pretty steep.

Then again, I pay £97/month to sky....

Is that directed at me? I paid £400 up front and pay £26 / month, so exactly the same as you. Except I get unlimited calls, as well as unlimited texts and 1GB of data.

How much did you pay up front for your phone?

Can you tell us where you get your figures from? Not only this one, but you quoted £1080 for a 16gb iphone 5 the other day.

Cheers,

Ben

Choice, innit.

Exactly. In addition to use while exercising, I go on occasional long train journeys for work. I can't predict what mood I might be in, and appreciate a choice from a selection of old favourites and a selection of new / little played music.

I bought some new heaphones recently. Until then I had put my music on at 128k. When I put it back up to 256k I found cutting music very difficult! I will appreciate putting it all (and a bit more, given apps and photos) back on :)

Although more memory is good if you afford it I thought one of the advantages of having an iThingy is that you don't need to store everything on your device ... You just download 256k quality music from the iCloud :?

I've been using iCloud and Music Match. Its great as long as you are not driving outside of the city centre. I still have one of the original 02 simplicity tariffs with genuine unlimited internet, I clear 2GB per month with no charges or 'fair usage' policy

(If you call £26 a month free)

I was looking at TMobile website where the 64GB is £219 up front and £41/month = £1203 (1GB data per month)

I'd agree if you was gonna get one - the smart choice is the 64GB. You wouldnt want to be thinking "I'd wish I'd gone for the bigger one" for the next 2 years...
