I would have preferred an iPad Mini, but no 3G will be a deal breaker if true.

why not just thether it to your phone?

Huh?

if you have a smartphone, most of them have a wifi hotspot option, sometimes referred to as tethering. Basically you enable it, then it turns your phone in to wi fi hotspot. So you then connect your tablet/laptop etc to the wifi on your phone and it uses the 3g connection on your phone.

No need to have 3g built in to the tablet and a seperate contract etc...

There might be a 3G Nexus 7 but when? (They can't even make enough wi-fi only versions at present so it could be a very long time.) No iTunes or AirPlay either.

There is the Samsung 7" Galaxy Tab 2 (3G + Wi-fi) but it also doesn't do iTunes or AirPlay.

There are now dozens of Airplay apps for Android.

iMedia Share, Remote for iTunes, Twonky Beam for example

I just think the whole event was a bit of a damp squib. I'm not saying anything about it's performance whether it's great or not so great but i think the design could have been so different. To me, Apple over the years have come up with "Game Changers" i.e. first Iphone, ipod, ipad, etc. This isn't one of them.

Interesting that now, the iPad is considered a game changer, whereas when it was released, it was widely dubbed "just a big iPhone" by the critics...

Thanks for the suggestions. However the 'tethering' idea sounds better. Seems like an iPad Mini is back on the list whether it has 3G or not.

I would first check with your network whether they allow tethering or if there are extra data charges for doing so. Some networks don't allow tethering or charge for the priviledge, others dont.

Indeed, I got a wifi iPad because I saw no point in having another contract when I could use my phone's data. Works perfectly when out and about. Important point about your provider's attitude to tethering though.

Let me know if you need me to try any of those Airplay apps to see if they work :)

It was a Desire, but now I'm talking more about Jellybean on a Nexus 7.

nexus 7 is a tablet, and the os is slightly different on a tablet then on a phone....

A tablet with a non-intuitive UI, yes.

you keep saying non intuitive, but having used, owned and support both, I don't really see much difference between the two.

Generally, and please don't take offence, I've found when people start to claim things like non intuitive, it's because they are stuck in their ways and don't want to learn new things. That's only my experience of having to support the things. And that's both ways, people going from Android to ios and vice versa.

So, not really sure what you consider non intuitive about android?

I'd have to have it in front of me (I forgot it at work today) but a few are:

There seem to be a number of different 'layouts' of apps, and I'm not entirely sure how (or why) they appear.

My kindle app is on my ribbon bar on my home page, and I didn't put it there.

I wanted to change my home screen to contain more items (other than the three useless things that are on there by default), and I thought it would be a case of drag and drop onto the home screen. When I did that, it said I couldn't because "that home page is full" or somesuch. Three items doesn't feel like full to me, and I'd expect it to resize the existing items (or something). Am I supposed to resize the existing items, and if so how? Do I need to delete one of those items because three is all that's allowed (which seems stupid)? Or is there a configuration item that defines how many items go on that homepage?

I'm not looking for answers to these questions, just pointing out how it's confused me more in the first five days of ownership than iOS has since the second gen iPod Touch.

Fair enough, and thank you for taking the time to post a reply, i wasn't baiting or anything, just genuinely interested to know. don't worry, i'm not going to post a load of how-to's, I'd just urge you to try finding the answers out and giving it a go. One mans rubbish and all that :)

cheekily though, I'd still say you are bit too used to using ios and don't like change ;) (tongue firmly in my cheek by the way)

Even if they charge for tethering, it'll still be far cheaper than a separate 3G data plan for the tablet.

Lightning To 30-pin adapter is £25! :O

http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MD823ZM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter
you beat me to it! Absolutely scandalous! it's £30 if you want it with 20cm of cable in there too. (which by my math, makes it £25 a metre for cable - I'm sure it's very good....).

will the new iPhone be packaged with a free adaptor? Will txhird parties be permitted to make them without extortionate licence fees??

Knowing Apple, you won't get a free adapter. It has no reason to. If you have an older iPod dock, that's your problem. And knowing eBay, you will get loads of sellers, whether license is required or not. ;) But Apple is unlikely to anger its loyal customer base by stifling competition here. In any case, it won't see other adapters as "competition". It's got other bigger products to profit from. Imagine Apple CEO showing a slide of $1 million profit from the adapter alone!

Say for example I bought a Peugeot 307 with their own name Roofbox and bars (actually made by Thule). A couple of years later, I buy a newer Peugeot, the 308, but would like to keep and use my old roofbox. However, the roof mountings don't fit... would I expect Peugeot to give me a new set of bar adapters? Of course I wouldn't and I'd just go out and buy a new set that fit my new car's roof. However it seems to have become a matter of course now that when you replace any other manufacturer's name with Apple, then it's a completely different matter.

Perhaps we should all still be using SCSI.....

To be fare apple have used that connector for probably 10 years and I'm sure most company's have changed there adapters in that time with no fuss.

Think people just like to have a dig at apple sometimes.

For me it would be more of an issue with the I pod then the phone as my phone dosent get docked as all my music is on my touch and I have 5 docks but they are not that expensive as they are used for background music as the main system is streamed to my atv

I guess if you spent loads on a top end dock it's anoyong but the £25 for an adapter isn't to bad my main worry would be the stability

Maybe new docks will take advantage of the bottom sitting jack as the audio source this could allow other company's to do the same and future docks could be more universal as Andrews picture earlyer in the thread.

Actually the EU commission recently put into effect that ALL cellphones should standardise to the micro-usb standard. Most of them have.

It avoids waste and makes charging simple and easy, even if you forget your charger.

I can now charge my phone using a lead from most of my recent gadget aquisitions.... Kindle - Micro USB, my old Nokia phone...micro sub, the 3 android phones in the household - micro usb. My bluetooth headset - micro usb. My car bluetooth kit - micro usb.

I simply don't worry about charging cables as there's probably 10 in the house!

But the fashion-house in Cupertino...nope.

Shame that you'd actually posed a valid argument but then spoilt it with the pathetic, sarcastic and cliched 'fashion house' line....
