I've seen some stunning mock ups on YouTube, this seems a bit too 'playing it safe'

Like a more powerful 4s.

Bit dissapointing

Seems to me Apple have given up. Absoultely nothing new and lagging behind already existing smartphones in most ways.

Whilst I agree, their sales will still equal the GDP of a small European country, so they probably don't care.

And I reciprocate your agreement.

No accounting for Baaaaahs.

That said, I have always thought that iOS felt quite 'sorted', and am not getting the same warm and fuzzies about Jelly Bean (yet).

I think it's because you've got used to the 80's wallpaper when there's so much more going on. It can be overwhelming outside the garden. :)

I am somehow reminded of AOL in the early internet days.

Apple are AOL. It was nice. It was safe and cuddly and warm.

.

.

.

.It all but died.

They need something new.

Maybe the 7 inch iPad can be that.

I need a new picture frame for the hallway.

I'm not going to try and argue the new iPhone is exciting (the efficiency of the Mac rumours sites put an end to that) but the AOL comparison is a weeny bit bombastic don't you think?

No. I've always been a keen student of UI design (as I'm sure are you, in your line of work), and I've always felt that simplicity was the key - I don't want to be 'overwhelmed'. I think, for example, that the 'advances' made in Vista :-| and 7 were a step backward in terms of one's interaction with a PC, and that 95 through to XP were the sweet spot in terms of just 'getting things done'. And whilst I might rail against some of OSX's counterintuitive...nuances, I think that recent changes in Mountain Lion are, to some extent, change for change's sake - Leopard and Snow Leopard 'just worked'.

Similarly, I think that iOS is simple and intuitive and does what it needs to do, whereas the Android devices I've used (admittedly only a couple) don't seem to work in the way I expect them to, which may of course be a case of me not reading the manual (I am a man after all). But if I have to, then I think that an OS/UI has in some ways failed in its purpose.

I think smartphone technology has peaked for now. We're unlikely to see significant advancements over the next couple of years, except for more powerful processors to support more complex games & apps, & probably more memory.

And battery life

I just think the whole event was a bit of a damp squib. I'm not saying anything about it's performance whether it's great or not so great but i think the design could have been so different. To me, Apple over the years have come up with "Game Changers" i.e. first Iphone, ipod, ipad, etc. This isn't one of them. Surely over the last 2 years the Apple design team could have come up with something different to this?. To me it just looks like a longer version of the current Iphone. A complete letdown in my opinion. I think I'll start looking at the Samsung Galaxy S3 a bit more.

Still, I suppose there are only so many ways to change a 'rectangle with buttons' :)

I was expecting a curved glass back...

Curved back => waste of space => larger phone => user = dork => flat back good

If anyone is interested, they should read Deiter Rams 10 principles of good design. You may not agree with it, but it spells out why Apple do the things they do with Hardware design.

I like the design of the iPod touch aluminium back simple and the loop why not keeps you from dropping a £249+ device.

If you just want the iPhone look you can download a launcher to give it to you.

I've been using "Go Launcher HD" on my Galaxy tab, as Touchwiz is a pile of pants.

However, the fact that it is far more customisable whilst necessarily making Android a little less obvious, means you can set up you device just how "you" like it.

Lightning To 30-pin adapter is £25! :O

you beat me to it! Absolutely scandalous! it's £30 if you want it with 20cm of cable in there too. (which by my math, makes it £25 a metre for cable - I'm sure it's very good....).

will the new iPhone be packaged with a free adaptor? Will third parties be permitted to make them without extortionate licence fees??

Knowing Apple, you won't get a free adapter. It has no reason to. If you have an older iPod dock, that's your problem.

And knowing eBay, you will get loads of sellers, whether license is required or not. ;)

But Apple is unlikely to anger its loyal customer base by stifling competition here. In any case, it won't see other adapters as "competition". It's got other bigger products to profit from. Imagine Apple CEO showing a slide of $1 million profit from the adapter alone!

that's very much a subjective thing though. I know plenty of people who think ios is less intuative than android and vice versa. Personally, I loved webos, shame it didn't take off, but there you go!

Intuition is learned, just because a person finds one OS easier than the other doesn't mean it is more intuitive, just that its more similar to what they are used to. For instance, Apples reversed trackpad makes perfect sense, but I refuse to switch it on. Its counter intuitive to me, but to someone who hasn't used a computer before it would be intuitive.

what was the last Android phone and OS you used, John? they've come a long way recently. hence Apple nabbing plenty of Google/Android ideas!

It was a Desire, but now I'm talking more about Jellybean on a Nexus 7.

Well, I'm probably going to get one. (It will actually cost £1 per month less than my existing contract and I will get double my current monthly download allowance.)

I have no docks so I don't care about that.

It seems (to keep prices down) there may be no 3G iPad Mini so that may no longer be an option.

There might be a 3G Nexus 7 but when? (They can't even make enough wi-fi only versions at present so it could be a very long time.) No iTunes or AirPlay either.

There is the Samsung 7" Galaxy Tab 2 (3G + Wi-fi) but it also doesn't do iTunes or AirPlay.

So my best, most compatible, options are to get a 3G iPad (too big) or get the iPhone 5 (at least the display is a bit bigger than my iPhone 4).

I would have preferred an iPad Mini, but no 3G will be a deal breaker if true.

I will wait until November (current 18 month contract ends, enough time for any potential iPhone 5 bugs to emerge, enough time - hopefully - to find out if iPad Mini will have a 3G version or not).

If Samsung made their tablets iTunes/AirPlay compatible (like almost every modern Windows PC/laptop in existence) then I'd have bought one by now.*

*Unless they are compatible and I am just unaware of it. (That very possible as I know next to nothing about tablets.)

nexus 7 is a tablet, and the os is slightly different on a tablet then on a phone....

Either way, if you have one, you should know that it's possible on android to just have home screens with app icons on ala ios, no need for all the fancy extra stuff you can do on android. So in that reguard on a basic level, they are exactly the same. IMHO of course :)
