Okay, so I've been fooling around for some time now behind my FLAC player's back. I didn't mean for it to happen, I guess we all say that, but my affections recently shifted to a... Turntable. She is a simple little thing, a Pro-Ject Carbon, and to be honest after my initial interest had been pricked and I had progressed beyond fumbling around with her, my interest had begun to wane. Then yesterday I met her bigger sister, the Xtension 10. Oh boy. I now know what the audiophile vinyl hype is all about.

I hate myself because I know that my digital files are of a higher resolution. I hate myself because I know I am listening to colouration and distortion. I hate myself because although I know it cannot sound better than digital, it simply does!

So I bought it there and then. So profound was my experience that I gave the dealer nearly £3K (including cartridge) On the spot. It was as simple and clearly obvious as that to me. Anybody else had a similar moment of clarity and been tempted back to the dark side?

As do I.

Davedotco said on here some time ago that to there is no point in fart-arseing around with budget TT's, and that a much larger investment is really the only way to achieve audio nirvana from vinyl. I am paraphrasing. He put it better. What happened on Saturday has somewhat proved his point to me...

Better buy some virgin vinyl for her to play with, or is she a he, listen to the reaction when the needle hits for the first time. Every record is different not like that boring digital which is the same all the time.

Amazon has already announced an increase in profits following Sunday's trading...

In the end I gave up my player for cost reasons, partly the rather large investment that it represented and partly for the ongoing costs, my preferred mc cartridges did not come cheap and need replacing.

As it turned out it was a good decision in a number of ways, first of all it got my mind off the hi-fi and back onto the music and secondly because it prepared me for the delights of online streaming.

I have mentioned this before, but I am not much of a 'repeat' listener, ie I do not play 'favourite' recordings regularly, I can't stand the same performance of the same piece being played in exactly the same way every time, it drives me potty.

The continual drive for new (to me) music or new 'versions' of known pieces is what makes Spotify so increadibly appealing, so long as I do not do comparisons with really good (vinyl?) playback the sound quality is good enough.

Have you heard Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence? You can't say they didn't try to "make it their own"!

But if it is on Spotify, I will later.

I love 'recommendations' that come out of nowhere, huge fun and as there is a hell of a lot on Spotify, most are easy to check out.

It can, and obviously does, sound better, because better is a subjective thing. Technically it is less accurate and measures worse, but the enjoyment you get from it and the objective facts aren't mutually exclusive.

Personally ive yet to take the leap for space and cost reasons, but there's clearly something to vinyl otherwise it wouldn't get such love.

I agree with much of that, for me it is finding new music rather tha replaying "old" music over and over, my cds hardly get played now, spend most of my time playing new music. Streaming is cheap or free, buying new vinyl is very expensive, even used vinyl can be also expensive and then you have all the problems with vinyl, even in the 70s I never got on with those.

If its not on Spotify I find most are on youtube. Just tried it, did not float my boat but then I'm not that keen on popular music.

It has a sort of novelty value.

As someone who 'grew up' with the originals (there are two) the contrast is jarring, not necessarily in a bad way.

Playing Immortalised (the album) from the top, sounds like the bastard offspring of The Prodigy and Sisters of Mercy, what the hell, I'll let it run.

*biggrin* I wasn't suggesting it would be universally liked, just struck me as certainly a new "version"

I wish I could afford a bottomless money pit with such endless field for fun and games for the OCD tinkerer and hoarder inside me. I wouldn't care less how accurate it sounds either.

You should embrace socialism. The magic money tree will supply all your needs with other peoples money.

As a citizen of a country that suffered through socialism for 60 years, I don't think I'll be doing that.

If it is, socialism is coming back to get you, this time from Brussells not Moscow.

If it isn't, stay out it's really, really bad for you. Already running out of other peoples money, ask the Greeks, the Spanish etc.

Almost makes me want to fit my NOS Pickering XV15 with original Stereohedron tip ... almost :)

Glad to hear you've returned to the dark side Gazzip.

Another notch on the bed post, we are gathering momentum and long it may continue.

We are not in the EU. Macedonia is blocked by Greece. We don't want in because we are doing great without it. But we have to show interest. Otherwise we will get labeled as pro-Russian and bombed by NATO. Currently the socialist are protesting to overthrow the elected right wing party for not complying with Greek nationalist demands (socialist gov in rule) and joining EU sooner. They are funded and suported by Soros funded NGOs all leaning left, pro left EU and US diplomats.
And this is outside of those 60 years of shitty socialism I mentioned. Should I embrace it?

Sounds to me that you have a pretty good grasp on how things work...*i-m_so_happy*

Whatever you do stay indepenant and make your own way. The UK is well on the way to achieving the economic success of Greece and the social enrichment of Sweden.
