How to convince the wife? Any tips?

I remember when my wife questioned "what the point was spending so much" Then after 1 year we went over to a friends house who had a standard all in one system (£150) setup and she innocently asked "is something wrong with your TV!" >)

I suppose one way to go about this is to bring up that you want to spend a grand on a pair of speakers. Of course she will say 'no' but the final compromise may be that you get the £400 pair of speakers that you wanted in the first place.

It will cost £1000 and will need to be a static fixture. (Just like the battle of Thermopylae in the garage and Agincourt in the loft.)

Probably no less intrusive than a full-blown 7.1 system with projector and screen and humungous AV receiver and 8 speaker cabinets (plus cabling and stands and racks).

Are you going to "control your wife" or "grow a pair" or just delight in the fact that your partner isn't some vacuous bimbo whose only interests are shoes, gossip mags, reality show celebs and X Factor?

The Jamo.D-500 system is a fantastic set up, finish is top notch in gloss black and they are wall mounted as well, not over powering looks wise and sound superb, but the best thing is they are wife/partner freindly, so you could try to convince her that not having floor standers any more would make the room look bigger and not so clutered, But then you have to work on the idea of having speakers on the wall, but as stated before take her with you when you dem.

1K to the guitar maker

9K's worth of free piano that I didn't want

500 for the piano seller to keep his mouth shut

The extra 1K from the 'haggle' which went to the wife as a good-will gesture for her to buy other stuff (sheet music etc)

Very funny. My wife has never complained about the AV system, but if she did I would point our her indulgence takes up much more of the house and is considerably more expensive - but that's children for you.

Did you learn your economics from The Right Honourable Gordon Brown MP?

That would mean he would sell the wife's gold at a knockdown price, use that as a deposit, take out a massive loan to pay for it all, promise to repay over the economic cycle and then run away without paying back anything so that the next fella picks up the bill.

If you feel you need permission to buy a pair of speakers you have a bigger problem. As said before, a relationship is give and take. In a man's case that means a lot of giving and a little taking. Buy her flowers every week. Once in a while take her out somewhere where she gets to wear her finest dress. Be sure you tell her how special she is and how beautiful / sweet / sexy / whatever works for her. On special occasions buy her something really special, like a pearl necklace, diamonds or a fur coat. And then, if you need new speakers once every ten years or so, then JUST BUY THEM.
