The quest for new music

HiFi is a fantastic thing, unfortunately many of the people I'm able to talk to about it don't get the enthusiasm I have towards appreciating and enjoying music.

My biggest challenge was showing my wife why sorting out a proper hifi is such a necessity. Admitidly she doesn't appreciate a lot of the music I like, Dream Theater, Metallica and Marillion for instance. She doesn't mind some Chris Rea or Dire Straits and can appreciate why I enjoy Pink Floyd, but even with Ben Howard she still didn't quite get it.

So I put on her Adele 25 album. Turned the 8000A upto around the 10o'clock mark and that got her attention, 'that sounds amazing compared to the car!'. I should bloody think so!!! But I'd succeeded, she got it, the room was filled with sound and Adele was singing infront of her.

The thing that amazed me was when I skipped to track 5, I was blown away. A simple track that just has Adele singing with the backing of a piano, what a fantastic piece of music. I don't want the piano to stop, the trebles are so crisp with the mid tones presented so clearly and then a bass from the low end that just surrounds you. This is something I've not experienced with this genre before because it's never drawn me in.

My quest is to find more piano based music like this, if anyone has listened to the track you'll hopefully have an idea of what I'm looking for. Full bodied piano, accompanied with singing or not, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Rich

Hi
Id subscribe to a streaming service and just check out all the genres.

Ive got tidal on a months trial and have found some good artists just by doing that.

I don't actually know anything else about this artist but look for An Pierce's cover of Tubeway Army's Are Friends Electric. It's from the 90s Gary Numan tribute album Random if that helps. It's an interesting vocal but she certainly puts the piano to full use and may well be the sort of thing you're after.

It's the only track of hers I've ever heard though, so if you find anything else by her I'd be interested to hear about it.

I actually find the Adele album difficult to listen to as, like 19, to me it sounds compressed and 'shouty'.

Having said that there are lots of other female artists who have produced music of a similar type, whose recordings are much easier on the ear. You might like to explore:

Kate Bush. - particularly the later stuff.

Suzanne Vega. - particularly the earlier stuff.

Angus and Julia Stone ( An Australian brother and sister outfit who record together and as solo artists. - A current fave listen!).

You might also like London Grammar whose lead singer Hannah Reid, IMO has one of the best voices ever recorded.

Enjoy!

Thanks everyone, from the bits and pieces I've initially listened to on youtube and iTunes there's some really good music there. London Grammar especially seems like it would sound very nice through the hifi. Im looking forward to going for a little cd shopping this weekend.

Just had I listen to a girl called Birdy, a few of her songs sound like they've got potential, 'Skinny Love' is definitely worth a proper listen

Thanks Mac and Sorreltiger, didn't see your posts earlier, had a little listen to a few of those on iTunes, Agnes Obel is definitely something I'd like to listen to more of. My cd collection is going to receive a long overdue growth spurt at this rate!

Cheers

London Grammar's 'If You Wait' is one of the best sounding Albums I know.

Hannah Reid's voice is spine tingling.

It'll also give your bass drivers a thorough workout too!

Agreed... can't wait for their next album.

Another album to try is Barnaby Bright The Longest Day... Beccy Bliss's voice is sublime.

Like the OP, my taste is very much Marillion, Metallica, and Dream Theater (Steven Wilson, Pink Floyd, Riverside, Porcupine Tree are all also favourites) but have found that more laid back music can show up the best of my system.

Often play some of my wife's cd's :-

Nora Jones - Come Away With Me
Eva Cassidy - Songbird
Carole King - Tapestry

On the other hand you could try some people who can sing!
teeth_smile.gif

Here are a few from the "pop" world:

Joan Baez - Joan Baez - Still IMO the best single "pop" album from a female vocalist

Carol King - Tapestry - As recommended above

Jennifer Warnes - Famous Blue Raincoat - Warnes' voice and Cohen's songs - what's not to love?

Sandy Denny - Anything

Shelagh McDonald - Let no man steal your thyme

Maddy Prior - Any of the Steeleye Span albums (Saw her live last year and she's still got the wonderful "swell" in her voice - remarkable)

Karen Carpenter - Anything

From the classical world just one as it is brilliant:

Anne Sophie von Otter - Greig Leider - It won the Gramophone Album of the Year when it came out and it is IMO probably the finest album in any genre - it's the one I'd take to a desert island (of course you might not like the music). Just voice and piano.

You should give Rumer a listen, "Seasons of my soul" is her best albulm in my opinion but the others are great too. The production on her albulms is very good too.

Thanks everyone, loads of new music to try out. I always find it amazing how cocooned you can become in the genres you listen to, so when you hear about music/artists you've never heard of but are clearly well known in their own right, it shows how much different music is out there. It's incredible and awesome that you'll always find something new that grabs your attention and takes you away somewhere.

For beautiful vocals accompanied by superb guitar playing, try Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker. Both of their albums are very close to perfection. Looking forward to seeing them live at Derby Folk Festival later in the year.

I'd also second Chris's recommendation of Maddy Prior. We saw Steeleye Span at the Great British Folk Festival in December and Maddy and the band were on fabulous form. Beyond Steeleye, there is a gorgeous album called 'Bib and Tuck' by Maddy & The Girls with some lovely harmony singing and a wide range of material.

Mary Black is another worth exploring. Her 'No Frontiers' album is particularly lovely, including the very haunting song 'The Shadow'.

Josienne Clark and Ben Walker "Fire and Fortune" was one of the finds for me last year, her voice is stunning and agree with that Mary Black album.
