I am looking at upgrading a very dated 27" Sony HD (ish-1080i) TV set up that has seen me through 6 years of uni.
Working with a fairly small room.
I am fairly confident on the TV upgrade (Panasonic Viera Tx-40cx680b):

But the sound system is new to me. I have only ever set up a very modest PC audio system with audioengine a2s running off of a dragonfly DAC.
I want to build up towards a 5.1 system to soften the financial blow.
Am I right in thinking that I need to start with an AVR?
My current thinking is that I need something like....
- Yamaha RXV379 AVR
- Q Acoustics 3010s x2 - as front L/R
+/- Q Acoustics 3090c - as centre
Giving me a 2.0 or 3.0 set up.
Then later adding the rear and subwoofer.
I'll be plugging in:
- PS4
- Virgin TiVo box
- Wii U
Would be nice if my girlfriend could plug her iPhone in easily as well.
Quick questions:
- is the Yamaha AVR good enough?
- do I need the AVR initially or can I start with 2.0?
