I've just recently purchased a panasonic dvd ex77 player. Could someone explain the benefits of purchasing the additional HDMI lead. Will it improve the quality of freeview tv when I record onto the harddrive, as opposed to just using the scart lead? Will it improve the quality of dvd playback? Indeed, is it really only useful for dvd. I really only bought thye unit for recording onto the harddrive.

No, it won't improve the quality of freeview recordings onto the hard drive. Yes it will improve DVD playback, and also the playback of those recordings you're going to make, provided your TV can handle an upscaled image.

Translation: Does your TV have an HDMI input on the back with the other sockets?

If your TV is a flatscreen (LCD or plasma) with an HDMI socket, and can accept pictures at 720P. 1080i or 1080P resolution, the Panasonic can uspcale its output via HDMI - ie add in extra lines of picture information - to make standard definition material such as DVDs and Freeview recordings look more like high-definition.

It's not true high-definition, but it can give greatly improved picture quality. I'd buy a sensibly-priced HDMI cable such as QED Qunex HDMI-P - see this thread for a good deal on this cable.
