Can someone please tell me if it is possible to get True HD etc sound through my speakers by connecting a Pioneer LX51 Blueray player to my Denon amp please. There is obviously no HDMI sockets but it has got analogue 5.1 inputs. Can I only expect Dolby Digital sound or can I expect the latest goodies?

You must set your blu-ray to decode the HD sound formats to PCM so it is decoded onboard by the player and with the analogue cables, it should be fine.

Thanks Valian TX for the reply. The Amp also has optical and coax digital inputs. Would I be better off using one of these? What does PCM stand for?

PCM is short for 'Pulse Code Modulation'. You will need analogue cables to carry HD sound via your amp as both optical and digital inputs do not have sufficient bandwidth to accomplish this. You can keep this for your Sky Hd or Virgin + set top box for the future.

The other viable option, is of course via a HDMI cable.
