Has anyone put an AT95e on an RP1?

I picked up one of the cheap RP1s recently and have a AT95e sitting unused which is probably going to be better than the stock Carbon(?) but just wanted to check that it wouldn't require spacers or any other faffing beyond the usual setting up?

If you have the Carbon 'in hand' then measure them both!

My gut is that it will need raising a few mm, its pretty quick to do

However you could always just suck it an see?

Chap on the HiFi section has just ordered an RP3/AT95e from Harrow Audio - maybe he could help you?

The Rega Carbon is a rebadged AT91BL.

Your AT95E will almost certainly be better.

Hi. The Rega Carbon is a modified AT91; the mod is a carbon cantilever which some of the old AT91's already had. It's a decent sounding cartridge with ample bass weight and a surprisingly full-bodied sound. It sounds far better than the budget Ortofon that used to come as standard with the RP!. The Carbon has been well-received by reviewers. I'd be inclined to give it a listen before you change anything as I don't think you'd notice that much difference.

What are the modifications that Rega have done ? How does the Carbon differ to the current AT91BL except in badge, colour and price?

Hi Chebby

Carbon cantilever. I read that they'd worked on the wiring and used smaller magnets but I can't verify this. Whilst I think the AT95e is a better cartridge for some tonearms, the RB101 and the carbon seem to be well-matched.

I'm not at all unhappy with the Carbon - quite the opposite in fact but the AT cartridge is sitting there doing nothing and, theoretically, should be better. If it's an easy switch, it should be worth comparing - the AT has a different shape to the carbon and looks like the stylus may be 1mm or so higher Hard to tell though. I saw someone had the 95e with an RP3 but I figured the RP3 maybe more accomodating since it usually ships without a cart.

Hi Makka. i thoughouldnt you might be interested in this. This afternoon I changed the carbon cart on an RP1; I was going to try the AT95e but I couldn't get it off a tonearm! Tried an Ortofon 2M Red which sounded fuller, richer, meatier and instruments and voices were very clearly defined. Air around the voices and life-like instruments. Great imaging. A touch analytical. Bass a bit more realistic. More sophisticated presentation. Worth trying.

Cheers.

Thanks, I think the cantilever on the 95 is a bit bent so i may just leave it. I will see how much my vinyl collection grows and note that one as a possible upgrade if the wife leaves any money in the bank account.

I'm a bit of a fan of the Ortofon red — taking it off my RP6 in exchange for a Dynavector 10X5 next week

The Dynavector is supposedly brilliant. I'd like one for an LP12. Should be great with an RP6. Be interesting to read your comments about the sound quality- I might use them to justify spending £300 on a cartridge.
