Will powerful a HK 3490 Stereo Receiver with 2 x 120W be to powerful for certain speakers? Will it blow my mezzo 2's to smithereens?

It will "be to powerful for certain speakers", but then again it will be fine on others.

Your speakers are rated to 120w, assuming yours are the same as the current model. I've heard that weaker amps pushed hard are more likely to damage your speakers through 'clipping' rather than powerful amps, perhaps someone could back that up for me?

Depends how loud you play music. If the amp or speakers start to distort then some damage may occur.
