Hello, i got my hands on an Harman Kardon AVR 158 and wanted some help with troubleshooting it.
Few years ago it was working perfectly and now it doesn't:
- When plugged to power the led turns orange and after a few seconds it becomes white, turning on by itself;
-The display and the led ring around the volume knob won't light up;
-The remote works but the avr won't do anything;
-The buttons on the front panel don't work;
The only thing to mention is that it stayed in a pretty humid enviroment but all the other devices that were around it are still working fine.

Appreciate any help, thanks!

Checked the power supply : +17v line sits at around 15.2v, 2.5v AC is 3.6v and the 4.3v AC is around 3.7v but randomly jumps. All the other lines are normal.

As it is out of warranty, have you done a preliminary check inside the case?

Please always ensure before proceeding you have disconnected the mains plug from the socket.

Check for burning smell or if there is moisture inside, use your hairdryer to heat up the spot.

I suspect the likely outcome, is leaving it with a professional repairer.

Good luck, I hope you get a positive closure.

I took everything apart and cleaned the boards with isopropyl alcohol, removed most of the corrosion on the ICs but it still does not work. The front panel pcb smells a lot like burnt FR4 but all the components look fine and nothing is shorted. Tried also plugging it to main power with the front panel disconnected and it still turns on by itself, so I think there's little that can be done now. Thanks for any advice!

No worries, looks like you've done the due diligence without success. If the repair is costly, you can always sell the parts on eBay.
