Thanks to the Prof, I bagged these from Play for £49.99, down from £159.99!! What an amazing difference from in ear phones. Like being in a room with music on at a decent level with no other noise apparent, compared to having to have the music on loud just to block out the noise on trains etc.

Agreed! Mine arrived today as well and have been running them in all evening whilst working and then just finished watching Frost vs Nixon and just before bed decided to have a listen - happens to be playing Walking in Memphis by Marc Cohn right now and it sounds downright lovely!

Can't wait to have a proper listen to them now!

Yes, yes, yes, yes! Fabulous aren't they.

I gave my OH a demo of them and she put it as "it's like your ears are receiving the sound as they should, as oppossed to being pumped into the ear canal" (or something like that). Like so many people nowadays it was the first time she'd heard headphones that aren't in-ear so a complete revelation for her. Alas she's sticking to the in-ear's as she thinks she'll look silly wearing cans on the train, lol.

I had a job getting mine just to try them out as she didn't want them on at all - no chance she will change from her Apple ones.

For sure - I enjoyed them more for their ear-warming ability than their sonic ability on Tuesday just gone!

Will do though haven't really had time to have a good sit down with them yet, hopefully tomorrow. They've been running in for about 25 hours now so should be coming into their own.

Trouble is, I've never actually owned a decent pair of on-ear phones so I'll have to compare them against my Shure E4c's which are (or at least were at one point) equivalently priced in-ears.

Thanks, but I am itching to hit the buy button now as they may go back up in price.

EDIT - I just could not resist the temptation. I have been looking to get closed backed cans as opposed to NC, but there are universally good to great reviews for the NS1000s on the internet, so I hit the buy button. I had been tempted by reviews of the Denon AH D1001, but a trial at John Lewis (£110) found them bass overload and quickly tiring. I then tried the cheaper AH D501s in a headphone display in PC World of all places. They were awful, the worst cans I have ever tried and they were £51. The Bose On Ears were good, but I did not like the build which has been criticised and again they are £100 plus. Various Senns were also tried and they were all very good, but for some reason I cannot put my finger on I never find them great. My review of the NS1000s to come as well.

I think you'll be happy - I haven't actually tried the noise cancelling aspect yet (nicely there's no separate box for the noise cancelling aspect, it's all held in the left headphone). So at the moment, with the few small tests I've done, I'm just running them with with no battery so there's no noise cancelling going on.

I think the NS1000s sound better with the noise-cancelling on. idc, I cannot offer a review in relation to other on-ears, but they are a massive improvement on the in-ears I have: Beyerdynamic DTX-50s. They will sound very claustrophobic compared to your AKGs, but that's not really a valid comparison, I guess. I mostly use mine on planes, and they really make the journey a lot more enjoyable. At £50 they're a great buy! (I bought mine about a year ago when Play.com had the same offer).

Thanks Hedgehog. I see from the specifications that the NS1000s are 100 ohms with NR off and a mighty 300 ohms with it on. There is also a split in reviews and comments as to whether they sound better with NR on or off. I got the impression that with NR on there can be background hiss, and with it off the sound is more detailed, but with less bass, which is my preference. One comment I read was that with a powerful amp they really start to sing. How do you find them with the X-CAN?

hated mine - sold them on - the sound was in my opinion (can't rem which way round now but with the ns on/off they) either sounded dull and bassy (although the levels of bass was was very good) or really bright and tinny ie lost the nice bass i really liked - def not worth the £150 price tag - bought mine for £50 also from play ages ago - very middle of the road ear phones in my opinion. the noise cancelling was ok but only really blocks constant noice - plane engines/trains noises ect

Matengawhat, that is the first really negative opinion I have read. I dont expect (want) them to be as good as my main cans. They just need to be better than what I have already tried so far from Sennheiser, Denon and Bose.

when you turn the noise cancelling on there is a little delay when the headphones sound change going from a little dull to a little tinny or the other way and that really brief little bit as they change over is how these should sound

they are def better than the in ear ones of which i have had a few - they are pretty compact and come with a good travel case - also lie flat as the cans rotate to 90 degrees

you will prob think that they are great for the money but if you're used to good cans that somethings just not quite right but then guess depends on how you like your music as its a personal choice

A number of reviews (forum and customer as opposed to magazine) mentioned neutral and realistic, which suits me. The What Hifi review is brief to say the least. I would have thought that a five star product would merit more than a couple of lines.

It was either I got cans now, that meant if I was listening to music and the family were quietly watching TV with me leaking sound I was no longer disturbing them. Or I saved for ages to get the new closed backed B&W P5s. The bargain that the Goldrings are meant they are worth a punt as a stop gap. I am still saving for the B&Ws which come out in January.

idc, I think the noise-cancelling gives them a bit more punch and presence (and a bit of brightness, but in a nice way), whereas I found them duller with it switched off. I don't normally use them with my X-Can, because they're travel cans for me, but I did for a while before I got the AKGs, and you're right, they sound better through it. But I don't think that's their intended use. One thing to consider is that even though I had mine for a year now, I don't think I've got 150 hours on them yet...maybe they're still running in?

They finally arrived! I am absolutely delighted with the sound straight out of the box as closed backed cans. They are more neutral then any other closed backed cans I have tried with nice detail and dynamics. So far, working my way through my jazzy prog playlist on Spotify, I find that how the music was recorded is portrayed by the Goldrings. So, if the bass was light, it stays light. If the midrange was emphasised, it remains emphasised. I really like that. Cymbols can be a bit 'tizzy' and the sound is towards bright, but not with every recording. The soundstage is far less than the open backed cans and all of the sound is in my head or my ears, but that is to be expected. If this is how they are now after only a few hours then wow, I cannot wait for them to run in.

I cannot hear the TV or anyone talking in the room and there is only a tiny amount of sound leak. They feel well made and they are comfortable, if a little tight around the ears.

I would love to try them with NR on, but I cannot for the life of me open the battery compartment. The instructions only say 'open the battery door', but twisting, pulling, sliding etc and no joy. Suggestions appreciated.

don't want to hijack the thread, but question is headphone related

I have an old pair of Beyer Dynamic D770 pro headphones ... my hifi is approx 5 meters away from where I sit at my computer

I have seen some headphone extension cables advertised on ebay .... would the quality of sound deteriate drastically if I were to use these long extensions?

Dim_span, on that point the Goldring's cable is so short at 1m, I have had to move my headfi to the other end of the cupboard to stop it from stretching. (In fact I have just managed to pull it out of the amp by leaning over) My AKGs came with a cable that is 3 m long. I am sure 5 m would be fine.

I noticed that in the latest issue of the magazine these headphones no longer appear in the buyers guide. That plus the very short review on the website seems to be a bit unfair. Is there a reason editors of What Hifi?

PS - I still cannot get the chuffing battery comparment open

Just pressure of space all-round, sadly - sometimes if we're squeezed for space in the Buyer's Guide, some older products get chopped, though we make it clear there are more reviews online. And i'm not sure why the shorter rreview of the Goldrings is online - that summary is from a later round-up we did, rather than the original review. I'll see if I can find the older copy and get it online.

And I have a pair of much-worn, much-loved NS1000s in my office at work - i'll have a look tomorrow and see how I cracked (not literally!) the battery issue....
