I think you'll find that's because "You're blind or you don't understand the measurements" (though admittedly that was while he was saying Class D - the technology used in their new speaker, if I recall - is rubbish).

Quite.

I think with that particular company, any loudspeaker or related technology that isn't made by them is regarded as rubbish relative to their own product - it seems to be a part of their marketing mantra and self belief. I doubt that it'll ever change, so there's not a lot of point complaining really, or even writing about it, as it just serves as a marketing tool for them, which is what they probably want, and quite possibly why they take the contentious stance that they do, such as to get attention and free market exposure.

Putting that aside, and an interesting debate about speaker drivers that has developed, I would opinion that the OP should follow his instincts and go with an AVI active solution - new or second hand.

He obviously likes them, and as the majority (but not everyone) seems to agree, they are relatively good value in the UK market place, and reputedly sound good.

Indeed, as the OP likes them, it would seem churlish for him to contemplate something else, as he would probably be wondering 'what if', should he change tack and pursue something like the Dynaudios mentioned, or other options such as Genelec, Event Opals etc in the active field.

Putting the personally objectionable politicking of the company aside, I think the OP should stop prevaricating, and go and get some 9.1's Mk 10 or 11, or whatever the latest iteration is, and live happily ever after...

Nah, he'd be wasting his money there, mate. Those speakers are far too good for such a flawed source as vinyl, so the great one has repeated many times. That is, of course, until they market a turntable which finally gets it right!

Until the next iteration comes along to improve on perfection, and the relentless box-swapping (or at least driver-swapping) goes on

Some owners merely observed all that going on around them, happy with their original purchase.

I'd say "most". I certainly won't be upgrading.

Sorry to bump up an old thread but I've just learned some new information about Sinar Baja and the 10" sub driver that AVI uses.

The reason the other chassis all look the same is because all of those drivers will have been made by Sinar Baja to customers spec. AVI use the most powerful 10" driver they can make so it has about 40mm of linear travel and a 75mm voice coil. smaller diameter magnets mean smaller voice coils and lower power handling. They are not available for DIYers.

Sinar Baja are absolutely huge and make 8 million individual drivers per year and 1.5 million complete hi fi speaker systems for numerous hi fi manufacturers. They also designed and make the special speaker systems for Bentley, some of which are sold as Naim and they supply most of the up market VWs, Audis etc.

Sub woofers are not difficult to design, they just need to pump lots of air, but the higher frequency ones are a balancing act and where all the money is spent. New ideas mean new chassis and only companies like Sinar can afford to keep tooling up for new ones, hence they are world leaders and are making progress towards better SQ.

Typically the tools to make a 6" die cast chassis are about £100,000 so it would besilly for a small company to make their own.

Nice advertorial.

Reading between the lines, the Scanspeak drivers were too expensive so this was the cheaper option.

As well as sounding better. Speaking as someone who's heard both, rather than taking any chance I can get for a cheap shot.

I assume you're not talking about the 10" subwoofer driver here?

I take it that you're referring to the new Sinar Baja tweeters which have replaced the old Scanspeak tweeters in the newest version of ADM9's. Despite costing a bit less the new Sinar Baja tweeters are apparently better than the old Scanspeak units and there's at least one ADM40 owner who's upgraded the Scanspeak tweeters in his speakers for the new Sinar Baja ones.

As you'll know, I'm pretty neutral on the whole 'debate', but I do recall getting ripped into for suggesting scanspeak may not necessarily be the greatest driver ever known to man, ever.

Yup. These don't have the bass extension, but I prefer them overall.

And a bit less wibbly wobbly I'm guessing?!

That must work out pretty cost neutral?

Haha. Yes, a bit less wibbly wobbly. And a lot less likely to kill if they somehow were dislodged!

Given I sold the Benchmark too, it was better than cost neutral. Getting a sound I prefer was almost an unexpected bonus. Win win. :)

Really?

I would kill (not really) to upgrade my ADMs to Opals.

I am a bass-head though :)

Herself if I remember rightly from the film.

As for the "him" you refer to, he is about as qualified to be called an "Oracle" as I am to be called a sycophant.

Did you not read my 'musings' elsewhere? Wouldn't blame you, I don't see an alternate career as a writer!

When I said I prefer them I was actually downplaying it. These are the most enjoyable speakers I've heard. As much as I liked the Opals (and I did, they are awesome speakers that were head and shoulders better than anything I'd had before), I wouldn't go back if you paid me.

Purely a tongue in cheek p**s take comment. After all AVI is considered to be a cult by some people on here.

I wonder why that is.
