Just popped a bottle of barolo reserva 1996 and listening to Cannonball adderley/somethin` else/Autumn leaves.... AMAZING!

i will be drinking lager and listening to alicia keys and paloma faith later on, any time spent when you can relax and treat your ears is what its all about tho

drinking plenty Erdinger beers ... eating olives and feta cheese .... wife and kids have gone to see a movie ....

currently have Melody Gardot - My one and only thrill on the hifi ... don't care about the neighbours, so am listening at the volume that I enjoy (while the wife is out) ...

it's going to be a good night

Just had the Jay-z version of Alicia keys 'Empire state of mind' on as loud as i dared.
Great tune but i dont like the way it was mastered, very bright, forward midrange and trebble with the bass taking a back seat.

I presume this is so it sounds louder/better on a typical car radio or mini system.

Can't be right, Jay-Z is seen as an excellent producer amongst the low slingers trade because of his excellent ability to dumb things down. Maybe he got a bit over excited about Alicia Keys' voice and dropped one.

Id say its definitly deliberate, to allow it to sound loud and clear on an average radio its bound to be heard on.

And compression used in the bass so that it can be turned up loud without over exerting bass drivers.
There is a decent amount of bass there, dont get me wrong, but its not on par with some better balanced/produced stuff of the same genre like Kelis.

Sometimes it takes a really bad system not to enjoy the music when in a relaxed and a little bit drunk state of mind.

Last time when i was home alone and had a couple of those strong belgian beers i listened to my 2nd system in the bedroom and i was really intimate with the music, it felt perfect. A couple of days ago when i was listening to my my main system with the same music (wich supposed to sound much better) completely sober with my wife running around busy with the kid and a bit afraid of turning the volume to loud it was like the music sounded so bad. Then again, i don't feel bad spending much more money in my main system as i had the same, or even better wonderful experience there when i had my ideal moment.

Ha, do you think so? A global superstar rap artist/producer releases record fit only for tinny BBC speakers. Not very New York, eh?

have a few beers, a spliff and your old sony cassette walkman will sound like a large 300 watt Krell amp connected to B&W nautilus speakers

Yes i do. Its a fact that a lot of modern pop music and the like is produced to sound well on a small radio's or car radio's as thats 90% of where its going to be heard.

They sure dont produce it with audiophiles in mind.

I appreciate that, as has always been the case but to say he screwed up the one decent song off the album to have it sound decent on radios is ludicrous. Hang on, I'll give it a listen and tell you my views.

Sounds genuine. Jay-z subdued middle of the road all round. The song is on the fence. Maybe my/your system?

Im not saying he screwed it up, its delibarate. I only have the cd single so can't comment on the album. With my system i can hear the difference in recordings with ease. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.

Having just run the sound for two shows today, getting home to a decent sound and bottle of Bordeaux rouge is bliss. It sounds sooo nice after PA! Time for some Stevie Nicks...
