Also, I'm a little surprised that there is no optical or coax out. Think that missing on the digital out is missing a trick and losing some potential market share.

fatboyslimfast:Looks swish, but no mention of prices on their website, and the "Buy Now" button takes you to their "Become A Reseller" page...

maybe becasue you are browsing from outside US?

I think US price is USD 999. so, UK could be GBP 799 or GBP 899?

those are present on the 4HD version. this 3HD looks like a trimmed-down (no wifi, no digital in/out, smaller HD) but still 24/192-capable and much cheaper Olive.

Fair enough and I'm sure there is a market for this product, but here's hoping that they have the sense to release another version at the same price point with the analogue outs stripped out and with only digital outputs!

How does this compare to say the Brennon or even dare I say the Naim Unity?

This would be absolutely stupid on their part, totally unnecessary and cost them probably half their entire customer base.

I do find the decision not to include digital outputs to be silly (as digital outputs would make the product upgradeable)... However, I suppose the logic is that they want to give you an incentive to buy the more expensive version, when you're ready to upgrade instead of buying a DAC..

The O4HD ($2300) is more than twice the price of the new O3HD ($1000). I would not call that an upgrade.

Olive is simply offering a cheaper entry point for customers. The only thing that would concern me is the sound quality as they use a cheaper but equally capable DAC i.e. will still play full-fat 24bit/192khz files.

Their thinking is that, assuming sound quality is acceptable, customers like myself would not bother with the networking abilities, additional capacity (500GB would be enough for some), or the need to connect digitally out or in. (After all Linn's top 3 DS players do not have any digital connectivity.)

If I could be assured of the sound I'll be saving now for Christmas 🙂

Exactly. I think having the option of this model in Olive range is good.

In general, more gear options for hi-rez music playback with good integration and control - good!

I guess we disagree on what an upgrade is... For me an upgrade is going to be at least double the cost of the item I own, as anything else would be a very minor improvement...

Also, while I think this version of the Olive maybe just what many persons need, if the sound quality is not what you'd like, then you have no easy option to improve the performance... You just have to sell it and buy something else.. So that will scare some persons off... keep in mind that so many HiFi types love to upgrade their systems...

Linn is a different example, since you are talking about their top 3 players... a top of the line CD Player or Music Server doesn't need a digital output, since the logic is that it is the best of the best (hence nothing for you to upgrade to)... Budget models on the other hand, are expected to be inferior to higher end models and so people often will upgrade them...

If Olive had Digital outputs on the 3HD, but not on the 4HD that would make more sense since the 4HD is their top of the line product... But not including it on the 3HD may hurt sales of that product...

More options can only be a good thing... Olive, Marantz and Rotel (assuming they actually release it) now all have music servers in the 800 - 1000 USD range... I'm still hoping Naim will release a version near that price (a UnitiQute without the amplification)... But the music server market is really growing...

Care to explain your rationale? I can't see how providing a parallel offering with an alternative output method is going to cost them any customers at all?!

Whether there is a market for that alternate offering is obviously up for debate. I think there would be - for those that already have a decent set-up with a DAC and don't want to pay for a DAC built in to their next source.

You incorrectly assume the majority of Olive O3HD owners would want to connect it to an external DAC. If it sounded good enough why would one want to? I certainly can do without the extra box.

Let me add some words to clarify the point:

Assuming it sounds fine when you buy it, but later on as you upgrade amp and speakers you find it to be the weak link in the chain.. then guess what? you can't just upgrade the Olive by adding a DAC. you need to buy a new music server...

It wouldn't have cost Olive much to add digital outputs, as even the cheapest CD and DVD players have them... So while stripping the wifi, digital in and reducing HD size clearly saves money... I think removing digital outputs is not in the consumer's best interest...

I'm sure the 3HD will be a great product for persons who have no intention of ever upgrading its sound quality (or are willing to eventually replace it with a 4HD) but it will turn off many audiophiles, who may have planned to initially use it as a full music server and later as just a digital transport...

No, If you read what I originally said, I'm suggesting that there is a market for another model in the range which has digital outputs instead of analogue. There are many people who have already invested in an external DAC and won't wish to pay unnecessarily for another built in to a new source.

If a decent source does not sound good in the first place, a better amp or speakers will only magnify its weaknesses.

On the the other hand if you are happy with a source, then better speakers and amplification should enhance its strengths, not hamper it.

On the Olive specifically - you can read the HFC (? or the other major UK mag) review online at TechRadar. Yes they considerably improved the O4HD's sound with an external DAC - the 2000quid Naim DAC. Good luck to you if you have the cash.

I stand by what I said - if it doesn't sound good to me I won't buy it, simple as that. A good source is a good source. And a bad one bad.

Agreed, but then one must ask, how much would you have to spend on an external DAC to meaningfully improve its sound?
