I've shortlisted a few DVD players at various price points, which I can probably get one way or another for under £150 - some brand new, some second hand.
Toshiba SD-280E £25 new
Toshiba SD-580E £60 new
Toshiba XD-E500 £60 new, 1 year free rentals
Cambridge Audio Azur 540D
Pioneer DV600AV or DV610AV £100-£130
Denon DV-1920, DV-1930, DV-1940
Denon DV-1740 2nd hand
Denon DV-2910 2nd hand £75-125
Yamaha DVD-S1700 new under £150
One's I can't see for under £150, thus I've them ruled out;
Denon DV-3910
Marantz DV6001
Yamaha DVD-S2700
On the one hand my first priority was good sound from the DVD player, both Audio CD's and DVD Concerts (PCM sound). Thus Yamaha DVD-S1700, Denon DV-1740, 2nd hand 1920 or 2910, Pioneer DV600 or 610.
But, I'm likely to get an external DAC in the future (DAC Magic or such like) so maybe it's not important to get Cirius Logic or Burr Brown DAC's in the DVD player itself, thus something cheaper and brand new like the Toshiba's (SD280 or XDE-500) might be best.
This will partner with an AudioLab 8000S, Monitor Audio RS1's.
Help and guidance appreciated - as I'm baffled by the choice and really don't know for sure which to put at top of list. Below are the main contenders I think, but I'm not sure.
In particular I don't know if Audio CD's and DVD Concerts (PCM) will both go from DVD player to external DAC.
The yamaha DVD-s1700 really stands out as an offer at £99 with 2 year warranty. The 2nd hand Denon 2910 seems good, but at 4 years old, I imagine it's high chance of developing a fault soon. The £25 SD280 seems a bargain and possibly all I need for a DAC. The XD-E500 looks a steel at £60. The denon 1740 2nd hand is a possible to
