I've shortlisted a few DVD players at various price points, which I can probably get one way or another for under £150 - some brand new, some second hand.

Toshiba SD-280E £25 new
Toshiba SD-580E £60 new
Toshiba XD-E500 £60 new, 1 year free rentals
Cambridge Audio Azur 540D
Pioneer DV600AV or DV610AV £100-£130
Denon DV-1920, DV-1930, DV-1940
Denon DV-1740 2nd hand
Denon DV-2910 2nd hand £75-125
Yamaha DVD-S1700 new under £150

One's I can't see for under £150, thus I've them ruled out;
Denon DV-3910
Marantz DV6001
Yamaha DVD-S2700

On the one hand my first priority was good sound from the DVD player, both Audio CD's and DVD Concerts (PCM sound). Thus Yamaha DVD-S1700, Denon DV-1740, 2nd hand 1920 or 2910, Pioneer DV600 or 610.

But, I'm likely to get an external DAC in the future (DAC Magic or such like) so maybe it's not important to get Cirius Logic or Burr Brown DAC's in the DVD player itself, thus something cheaper and brand new like the Toshiba's (SD280 or XDE-500) might be best.

This will partner with an AudioLab 8000S, Monitor Audio RS1's.

Help and guidance appreciated - as I'm baffled by the choice and really don't know for sure which to put at top of list. Below are the main contenders I think, but I'm not sure.

In particular I don't know if Audio CD's and DVD Concerts (PCM) will both go from DVD player to external DAC.

The yamaha DVD-s1700 really stands out as an offer at £99 with 2 year warranty. The 2nd hand Denon 2910 seems good, but at 4 years old, I imagine it's high chance of developing a fault soon. The £25 SD280 seems a bargain and possibly all I need for a DAC. The XD-E500 looks a steel at £60. The denon 1740 2nd hand is a possible to

You can get brand new Denon 1940 dvd players for under £140 - you can't go wrong with that.

The Yamaha's very tempting at that price if you want both music and films, and especially in one box.

Don't be tempted to think that a £25 DVD player will suddenly transform into a world beater by adding a DACMagic, I haven't found this to be the case.

It's come down to the following, in this order;

Yamaha DVD-S1700 - new £100, 2yr warranty

Pioneer DV610 - new £130, 1yr warranty

Denon 1940 - new £140, 1yr warranty

Denon 2910 - 2nd Hand £100, sold as seen

Units mainly for use with CD and concert DVD's. DVD movies will be least used purpose.

I'm inclined to avoid 2nd hand due to reliability concerns. The Yamaha is top choice, bar the negative posts concerning reliability (failure to read discs, erratic behaviour when warmed up etc).

Your opinions welcomed.

I'd ruled out Toshiba SD280, SD580 and XDE500 - although if XDE500 was back down to £59 with 2yr guarantee and free DVD rental for a year, I would now take that as first choice.

The Denon 1940

Even bearing in mind it's for the music and not the picture, gerrard?

I played some SACD and DVD audio on mine when I had it - not cds - although I did try them I had a standalone cd player. SACD and DVD-A sounded very good. I have to admit, I thought that the OP was interested in the whole package though - sorry OP. The Denon upscales very well indeed and as a transport, I'd imagine it to be solid as it's very well made and I never had any trouble with mine not reading discs.

Why not buy a Sony 995RDR?

Its an excellent player, has a 250g Hard Drive, which if you dub your CD's onto it will sound as good as most CD players, and it upscales SD TV to full HD.

All in one neat package. Can buy them now for £300 or a bit less.
