That's clever and interestingIf you have an analogue watch, you also have a compass. In the northern hemisphere, point the hour hand at the sun, and halfway between there and 12 o'clock is south. In the southern, the reverse is true. On the equator, maybe you'd want a proper compass...

doesn't work well in a cloudy Wales....When it's dark, find Ursa Major/the big dipper - the saucepan shape. Follow the side of the saucepan away from the handle upwards, and carry on upwards. That side of the saucepan is about 20% ot the way to Polaris, so another (roughly) four times that distance brings you to another brightish star - that's Polaris, which is (give or take) North.
