David.......so the Marantz PM6010 KI would have been a good one to use with these Q500's? I assume the PM6003 would be ok too, but the PM8003 would be best, right?

Alternatively, the Marantz SR7005 would be a good single amp option with improved 2 channel performance? What kinda stereo amp would compare well to this receiver?

steveR750....not sure what that was meant to mean?

It would've been better than most AV receivers. You'd have to try a PM6003 to see if you feel it would be worth adding to your system - I'd rather be paying out for a bigger step up.

I haven't tried them directly, but the SR7005 would probably more than likely be equivalent to a PM8003. A 2 channel demo of the two will give you a better idea of which route would suit you best.

FrankHarveyHiFi:I really wanted to use a Marantz SR7005 or Pioneer SCLX83 and show you what they were capable of!

Go on I dare you

As a 'one amp' set up works better with a Harmony remote (and the wife!!!!
emotion-5.gif
), it looks like the Marantz SR7005 could well be on the demo list for next year......

I'm assuming Marantz amplification would be better than Pioneer, namely the VSX LX53, as KEF use it to demo their speakers? Or do they just have a better arrangement with Marantz than Pioneer?

Unfortunately I've not had the pleasure of a Q/SCLX demo yet,but I'm looking forward totrying it for the first time

Marantz and Pioneer are different, it'll be a personal choice as to which you prefer, unless one really does favour the KEF's....I'm hoping to try some Q's at home at some point.

AV receivers are getting better. I think in a lot of situations people will try an AV receiver and hi-fi amp together and go fir the AV receiver if it's close enough. Most people want a simple system, and not have to faff about with numerous in order to preserve the 2 channel, performance, especially as many people are listening to music less and less. I personally want my music to sound as hood as possible, even if I didn't listen to it much, so would rather have a separate system purely for music as long as space permits.

I'm not saying the SR7005 will definitely sound as good as a PM8003, it's just a guess, but if it's in that ball park, most people would be more than happy with it's musical performance.

Max,

I have found a review of the Marantz SR7005 on another website......it got a 5 star review, but the write up didn't mention the 2 channel performance, unfortunately....

David,

.....really!!

Just read your demo review on the SR7005/LX83 using RX6's speakers on 'the other' forum site....

Sounds like the Marantz SR7005 is best with slightly 'leaner' speakers like the Q500's....

Cool.......

guys, lets not forget that in a recent big question the participants found a little budget rotel integrated amp to be better with stereo music than several avr's of varying prices.. if memory serves me that included one avr that cost £5k..

Well you have to take each comparison on it's merits, but I'd say that there will be aspects of a dedicated 2 channel amp that won't be beat by an AV receiver, but they are getting better. Like I said, many people might be prepared to overlook the smaller aspects of certain comparisons in favour of a simpler, "do it all" system.

A testament to how good the Rotel's are, which I keep trying to get across...

Let's not forget that price isn't everything - some AV receivers will be better than some 2 channel amps, and some 2 channel amps better than AV receivers.

Hang on, is this the same monthly article where people couldn't hear the benefit of a higher end one box AV amplifier against a sub £1k one? Obviously not demonstrated properly....

Obviously not demonstrated properly....well, each of the four stereo amps ive had so far have been quite a bit better than my yamaha rxv-765 in pure direct mode. but i suppose as good as it is the yamaha is still a budget avr..

there's been several surprising results from recent big questions, no difference could be found between high end and poverty spec bdp's either, its an informative test that big question..
