Could you work in. . . .

. . . .a hi-fi or AV outlet?

Given that I've just tested some speakers at home, I couldn't work in a busy hi-fi retailers. I would be too biased for starters. I'd be offering out mug of tea or coffee even if they had only come in for banana plugs or spade clips. No no no.

So could you?

its interesting, my main complaints are.

  • internet pricematching after a dem
i did a demonstration where a customer was checking prices on his iphone during the dem.

  • people not makeing there own mind up
b&w 685 vs monitor audio RS1 both £380 a pair both excillent but differant.

In which case, your attention is drawn to House Rules, and specifically No 9:

'9) Manufacturers, retailers, service providers and their staff are
required to identify themselves as such in their signature. Any
additional information - such as the telephone number, email and
website address of the company - should be put in the user's profile,
where retailers must also list all the brands they stock. 'Trade'
members of the forum failing to meet these conditions will be removed,
as will those the moderators suspect to be trade members posting under
an alias.'

I'd get bored very quickly I think. I'd end up stocking fine wines and books and music and, well, you get the idea.

Indeed, but that doesn't mean he or she doesn't have to comply with House Rules, which were recently updated to clarify the position of 'trade' posters.

I would if I had to but probably would not enjoy it, I would be more inclined toward Hi-End Full Service, go to peoples houses talk about what they want from the system, select bits, demo set up etc seems like there may be a bit of a challenge there, only problem is you will be dealing with people who want the best just because they can afford it not necessarily because they appreciate music.

My local dealer have every Sunday and Monday off and don't start work until 10:00am and have all bank holidays off.

Once every month I work 12 shifts without break (seven of those at night). I also work bank holidays if scheduled (including Christmas day) and many weekends. So I would love their hours!

However I would NOT love their pay, and I get to work from home which is near impossible in hifi sales. Being nice to everyone would really try me too. I am a naturally dislikeable person and wish to continue being so, at least professionally. All that smiling and agreeing with people would really tick me off and I would probably end up hitting customers!

You should try PC support - I did that for 4 years before I finally managed to climb out...

"Stroppy" isn't the word for people with a PC issue and see you as being the direct cause of it because you work in the industry and are unable to fix it within a minute.

I'd love to own a decent HiFi shop (if I wont he lottery etc...) but couldnt work in one now.

I love my Monday to Friday 9-5 job; more so that I work from home on Mondays and Fridays and the rest of the week I'm usually out and about with clients or on site etc...

I specialise in Defence & New Media recruitment so the money is very good!

A little off topic - cor! you wouldn't have any spare literature on the RNAS would you, dan? You probably know I'm an Military history researcher and archivist (anorak more like), just love collecting anything that vaguely relates to my father's service.

Course, with WHFI's blessing.

Thanks.

I've worked in IT all my life, and would love to get out - the prof has hit the nail on the head there!

I have been toying with the idea of doing exactly this as a means to an end - ie getting on the bottom of the ladder with a view of one day owning my own shop. Trouble is that I'm (a) not a natural salesman, so I would find it difficult to sell a product I wasn't completely enthusiastic about, and (b) I don't have the capital to sink in to starting a new business (especially in the current economic climate).

And as has been said above, and something my small local independent dealer told me years ago when I discussed it - it's a "life-style" job - not one to make millions (said dealer said that he wouldn't be able to live without the income his wife brings in).

If I won the lottery though, the very first thing I would do is look into finding a place in the market and start up a business...

I dont sorry PP

I predominantly deal with 'behind closed door's' projects (full DV clearance only) and IT Security related roles.

I can always do some digging though and see what I can get up!

I don't suppose a few pics from HMS Glory (during the Korean action) like this would be of use would they PP? (My father was serving on HMS Glory.)

Fantastic! I collect anything to do with RNAS, Fleet Air Arm & Coastal Command. My Dad served with the latter at Sullom Voe, Shetland so any info on water/aircraft would be brilliant.

Thank you, chebs.

I personally think with time the High-end will sold from home and taken to people homes to demo it seems far more logical than going to a shop where it will sound completely different to how it sounds at home, I can't really see there being hifi shops in a few years time.
