Hi guys looking to pick some brains? At the moment i have Marantz cd6000 ose LE. I think its a very good cd player especially connected to my Marantz pm 7200. However like everyone on here im looking to improve even if its on a budget! The cd player on one of my other systems has packed in so the oseLE will be moved to that system or the new used machine will be.

Budget used machines i have in mind are all Marantz. The list is: cd60 se, cd63 se, cd63 ki, cd67 se, cd67 ki, cd6000 ki, cd 52 mk2 se. The cd6000 ki may be just out the budget as they do tend to go for about £200.

I have 2 other machines lying around in need of repair, a cd 67 (not an se) which needs a new laser at a cost of probably about £25 and a dv4100 ose which was an incredible machine for cd playback but im not sure why it it just died on me and may cost too much to repair. Any ideas anyone? All of these machines can be had for as little as £45 except for the 6000ki.

The older machines such as cd40, 42, 50, 52 etc are super reliable. my third system uses my fathers old cd 40 which never misses a beat and has never required a repair. However my cd6000 osele lasted a week after i purchased from ebay when the laser packed in! Thankfully i was able to get one for £20 or so with about an hours carefull work. My Dads old cd 67 has a knackred laser too but i dont think the standard 67 is really that great which is why i havnt bothered to repair it. My dv4100ose was an awsome machine, outdated now for dvd as it doesnt have HDMI but as a cd player it had a huge powerfull sound , almost like my amp and speakers had been give a shot of steroids! So to answer to your reply, YES you are right but if its just lasers i have to worry about on mid generation machines then im not going to worry too much.

Its not just lasers, these are normally the cheapest part to replace when things go wrong.

Perhaps then my advice would be to buy the most recent model you can get, this theoretically having less 'mileage' on the mechanical parts.

My head tells me you are 100% right in what you are saying........However my heart says get an older machine. Ok, if i was to ask you to make a recomendation on an older machine and a recomendation on a newer machine, what two would you come up with. Ive just found a laser for my cd67 for £15 plus £4 delivery. Wonder what it would be like if attached a DAC to it, maybe a used Musical Fidelity or used Beresford? Just a thought!

I would look out for a 63 KI they go for about £100 on the bay.

Lazers are not expensive but not as good as the original ones. You can have the players lazer replaced for about £70. I hear the tray tends to go first that also about £70 to fix through a specialist repairer. If you are having the lazer replaced you may want to replace the tray (belt etc.) as will be cheaper as cdp is stripped down already.

I'm really fond of my Denon DCD 835. Picked it up on ebay for a song and it's a great player. Better than my old Marantz CD63 MK2 KI and has a very engaging sound (cleaner, more neutral and spacious). Well worth a go if you can find one IMO.

Ive made a decision! It might seem a bit off but i have my reasons. I have a Marantz dvd4100 ose lying about. It looks pristine but for some reason about 3 years back it just died. There is no readout but the power is flowing through as the optic socket in the rear is glowing red. These machines are past it now for dvd use as they dont have HDMI, but for cd they sound fantastic, really they do! So my next task is to find someone local and reputable to fix electricals such as this and we are back in business. If any of you see one cheap, SNAP IT UP!
