I was perusing the Yamaha web site and saw the mention of this feature 'CD Direct'. I looked at the PDF for the A-S700 amp but was still confused. I understand 'Pure Direct' which is a standard feature where the tonal circuitry is bypassed for better quality audio. This 'CD Direct' appears, according to the diagram, to go straight from the CDP to the power amp.

Can anybody make a full and clear guide to how this works?

Please include how the physical connection is made and how volume is controlled.

As a footnote I also noticed that no Yamaha stereo integrated amps appear to have been reviewed, is there a reason for this?

No I can't find the information you require (yet). But I can quote from another review where it says...
"Right behind the CD input sits an op amp which Yamaha's marketing turned into CD Direct Amplification to signify a discrete gain stage. This is said to stabilize the signal prior to entering the main circuitry while maximizing noise and dynamic performance."

IIRC, CD Direct bypasses the amp's main input switching and preamp block, passing the signal direct to the volume control, and then on to the power amp section.
