hi all ive been looking at the panasonic bd30 for a while now but as i have an old sony strdb1080 amp with no hdmi i was looking at the bd50 as it has multichannel outputs so i can still get the new sound formats ie dts master audio and true hd but ive just looked at my amp and when you use the multichannel inputs you cannot adjust the bass and treble on this amp and this amp does sound very flat set to 0 so was just thinking about going for the bd30 or new bd35 and maybe change amp later what do you all think? thanks mark

Tough one. I think I would probably go for a player which can decode everything onboard and keep the amp for the moment - it looks like it was a pretty darn good one in its day so it's the quickest way you'll get a really good sound. The idea behind this is, I would then eventually look to replace the amp as well. This way, rather than compromising and getting a budget Blu-Ray player and HD receiver, I'd get a mid-priced Blu-Ray (whether that's the Panasonic BD50, the Sony S550 or even better, the Panasonic BD55 is up to you really) and then, when you can afford it, match it with a medium amp to replace the Sony (e.g. like the Yamaha DSP-AX683SE). Going this route I think will be a big improvement on your current setup, rather than just a slight improvement on it.
Of course that's just me!

I agree with the Professor Buy the most upto date player and go for medium price amp the yammy onkyo 875 denon 1909 etc this may depend on what speakers you are using but i think thats your best bet.

Hi,

Would second everything said so far - I have an older amp too and would buy a Bluray player with analogue outs to get HD sound this way and then when I upgrade my amp I'd have a good combination.

You ain't alone prof!

Cheers,

Pana BD30 old model BD35 new model

Pana BD50 old model BD55 new model

Sony BD350 new model

Sony BD550 new model

What you have to remember is that everything 'should' go thru you amp, so really holding onto the Sony isn`t really an option, go new buy new, I look at it this way buy stuff that is compatible, not new to old or old to new thats not compatability.

But, hello thats my opinion, and what do I know
