Hi All I am about to buy a 24" Apple iMac and will be using it play my music as I dont have approval from the girlfriend for a seperate seperates system. Thus my question... What speakers will give me the best sound (listening to Apple Lossless), look stylish next to my imac and cost less than £300 ideally. I listen to mainly Dance and House with a bit of R&B. Am currently considering the Bose Comapnion 3 although dont like the sound of some reports about a background hiss when no music is playing. p.s - Not a massive fan of having a seperate DAC converter on the desk! Thanks in advance!

This is a very difficult question to answer; no wonder you asked for help!Although I haven't heard it myself (yet), I would suggest you take a look at the audioengine 2 speakers. Here's a review: http://stereophile.com/standloudspeakers/1207ae/ I think the greatest limiting factor in a system with a computer as a source is definitively the (internal) soundcard and DAC. So, if you really want to go hifi, there's no way around an external dac. Only alternative is a product like the AVI ADM9 with the souncard/DAC and amplifier already built IN the speakerbox. See http://www.avihifi.co.uk/

I would like to add that a good headphone would probably give you the most performance per pound. Try out some grado's.
