Best height for rear surround sound speakers

I need to mount by rear speakers on the wall directly behind the sofa but I'm not sure how heigh to put them. Is there an optimimum height?... I'm hoping to point them downwards as I've ordered some ball-joint brackets.

Are there any good guides around for speaker positioning?

Ear-height or above. Higher is good.

i have mine at around 400-500mm above ear height at around 110 degrees or so behind, turned toward my seating position a little

If you check the guidance for speaker placement on a site like Dolby.com, you'll get some more pointers. ÿThe surrounds in a 5.1 set-up should actually be either side of your listening position, not really behind you.

Mine are 10" below the ceiling, installed by the MA main dealers.

I actually prefer them being behind a little. When i demoed some gear at audio T they actually had them behind and slightly to the side firing forward and i thought this was also great fun.
