Audio Return HDMI 1.4 for non 3D TV?

I'm considering getting an AVR to replace my stereo amp, however I'm not clear if the audio return feature available with HDMI 1.4 spec is only a benefit if you have a 3D television. I have a sony 40EX503 and would like to know if I could/should be looking at an AVR with this facility?

Where would an audio return be useful?

Basically it saves you having an optical / analogue connection going from the TV to the amp if you want to have the internal TV's tuner sound go through your home cinema system. Nothing to do with 3D.
