Its reaching the point where I think we should have a whip-round, and buy it for him the Christmas!!

He'd ask for the money instead, before spending it on another Blu-ray player.

Is it safe to post my email address? All donations welcome. :). I promise I will get it calibrated.

Upon photographic evidence of a receipt and uploading of calibration charts we'll figure out some way of reimbursing you.

calibration is probably the most cost effective " upgrade" you can invest in.

I am sure I have said that a few times over the last year or so on here - there is no doubt its miles better with than without :)

Out of interest, jog3004, how are you finding the F8500?

Have you noticed any brightness pops, screen uniformity problems, or intrusive operating noise?

Also, who's calibrating your TV, if that's not too intrusive a question?

Not personal at all strapped, Julian from display calibration is doing it. I spoke to Steve withers but his price was nearly £100 more than Julian as I live in Yorkshire & the travel costs increased the price. I tried another calibrator in Lancashire but they never responded (one wonders if war of roses is still active ). I think I've been really lucky so far, I'd read issues of brightness pops as well as other issues on AV Forum, but later in the thread many claimed that these had been resolved with software updates, but I've not experienced any picture concerns at all, I was especially a little worried re banding that some reported, but again I've seen nothing. I actually had planned to buy the Panasonic ZT at first, but got seduced by the idea of a bigger screen, so then thought VT, but with many threads on various forums of people having picture issues & poor response from Panasonic, as well as starting to read rave reviews for the F8500, I decided to check it out k subsequently bought it. One sales guy actually told me that Sansung provided the panels for Panasonic, I've found no evidence to support this though. The set already has a stunning picture quality, can't wait to see what the calibration does, role on Monday :cheer:

I'm pretty sure this is a typical example of salesperson knowledge.

It'd be bad news if this was true, since Panasonic has struggled to mass produce uniform plasma panels since 2010.

Glad all's OK with your F8500!

thanks strapped  i hope it is untrue, otherwise I think paranoia will set in & I'll start analysing my screen instead of watching & enjoying. In fairness to Panasonic there may be many happy customers who are happy with their screen, possibly a number of these will be oblivious to issues we discuss on here & other forums. I'm hoping Samsung carry on plasma improvements as the F8500 has a removable media box that you can replace with the upto date box, they sell it as a tv that'll never go out of date, I question how this can be the case, as it won't improve the hardware, which will date, I'll believe it when I see it.

Incidentally strapped, after reading my last post, I did not mean any sarcasm with the thanks, I meant this relating to your comments that my tv is ok, then went on to the claim that samsung provided screens to Panasonic.

I asked as I may push for a Samsung F8500 as a VT65 replacement. It's useful to know that you've spotted no obvious issues.

I've tried various coloured screen & found nothing, however, one thing I do notice is that when I stand & move closer to the tv, the picture darkens very slightly, when I researched this, this is normal & supposedly is associated to the filter & also has the same effect if sat on the floor looking up.

Great news, Series1boy! I've actually spoken to Mark Hodgkinson on the phone, he seemed very nice and knowledgeable (spelling?). He is a close colleague of Stephen Withers, who did a great job on my four televisions. Let us know how the calibration goes. Oh, if possible, ask Mark to calibrate your set using one of the presets that you don't normally use, so that afterwards it should take only about 15 seconds to change from the calibrated preset to the preset that you were using previously, and you will really notice the difference. It may take you a day or so to get used to the change though, but after that, it's all gravy.

Right mixed feelings. Tv done and to be honest not what I expected. The picture is darker than the 'normal' setting I had it on before. Only watched a sky HD movie for now. I'm going to watch the new wolverine on bluray later so will let you know in more detail my thoughts soon after then.

As Son of SJ says - I will need to give it a couple of days for me to get used to it.

its not unusual for it to look a bit odd to start with, as we're often used to watching sets that are too bright and become accustomed to those settings (I found my picture seemed quite 'red' initially, but now I look at other sets and can see how off the colour is through being too weighted towards 'blue' - apparently manufacturs do this to make whites look brighter in the showroom).

Persevere for a few days and try a selection of blurays (remember sky's only 1080i so not the best test of what the set is capable of).

Did you have a 'daytime' and 'nighttime' setting calibrated?

Now then, is that because you're now used to the colours in your set? ;)

Series1boy, don't lose heart. If you have a spare 20 minutes, read through my experiences, on page 14 and then on page 16 of this thread. I was a bit dubious of the calibrated settings at first, but now I think that they are great, particularly on the LG 60PZ950T in the kitchen and the Pioneer PDP428XD in my bedroom, which are the TVs that I watch the most often. From time to time I change to the pre-calibrated presets (which takes about 15 seconds) just to remind myself how garish the old settings were - a bit brighter yes, but, to my eyes, wrong. Your 64" Samsung 8500 plasma is a fantastic set, and I'm sure that Mark will have had it working at its best. The one thing that I will say, and here I'm quite prepared to disagree with the other people who have had their sets calibrated, is that you may find that slightly increasing the sharpness and / or swtiching on the edge enhancer helps a bit.

sonof sj my friend, it is I jog3004 that has the samsung, Series1boy has a VT  but I agree with your comments, I'm expecting that my settings are probably brighter & my wife to complain "how much have you wasted doing this, I preferred it before!" But, regardless I think it will be worth it, although may take a few days to realise this. I'll let you know Monday pm after it's done.
