Exactly - there is life out there beyond the 'usual suspects'!

I had many happy years with a Arcam 72 but was curious about its big brother. When the 192 started being sold at a reasonable price a couple of years ago i grabbed one and i can say its a very different player. Its leaner and sounds a lot more lively with much tighter bass.

It will show up bad recordings for what they are though. Pretty much how the magazine described it really.

potboyslim:If you can go get the cyrus, then that would blow away the rest by miles!

I disagree chebby, as when every review out there says the cyrus slays all comers under the £1000 mark, and some above, does this not lead to the conclusion that it is infact the best sub grand player out there.

The review speaks for itself if you go read it in the reviews section.....
You obviously didn't read the January 2010 issue

pauladamss:home audition sounds great but which shops do this i know rs does but im pretty sure they dont stock these items i have a sevenoaks but dont know that they do home audition???

Do RS offer home demo? Or is it that you buy the item, take it home and if you don't like it you can exchange but not get a refund? I've heard a lot about the 30-day money back, but not sure this happens in practice. Checked with my local store a while back and it was "buy-try-exchange" and refund only if faulty.

Richer's policy is clearly explained on the leaflet they clip your receipt to. You can return an item within 7 days, unopened and un-used, for a full refund. You can return an item within 30 days, used/opened, for a refund minus 15% re-stocking fee. In practise I have found them to be a bit more flexible than this, but I think you would need to make sure you agree anything outside the standard terms at the point of sale to save embarrassment/argument later.

Regarding demos, my view is that dealer demos in the demonstration room at the shop are virtually useless. You hear the equipment, but in a completely different acoustic space to your own room. Whilst it might help to compare different components that you hear at the same time in that same room, it doesn't really help you to work out how it will sound in your own room.

In my view offering home demonstrations is a central part of being a specialist hi-fi dealer. The best way is to build up a bit of a relationship with a dealer by doing some auditioning in-store, and then broach the subject of a home demo of the component you think might be best.

Last year I made the move from a CD72T to a CD192. The differences were clear and impressive.

The differences were greater changing the CDP, than when I changed my A65+ amp for an A85 later last year.

If you like the sound of your 72 Paul, know that the 192 doesn't detract from the 72s strengths but adds greater clarity and pace.

iv pretty much decided that i will go for the home trial on the rega apollo whilst keeping an eye on ebay for the cd192 at least if i dont like the arcam i will probably get my money back reselling it
